People were cautiously optimistic towards the upcoming Mortal Kombat film adaptation, but with the recently released trailer many fans have turned their hype meters up to the maximum level. The short teaser shows a healthy loyalty to the source material, showcasing several obvious nods to the almost thirty year old franchise along with some more subtle hints only fans noticed.

The ten details below most likely flew over the average viewer's head. However, fans of the series saw most of these upon multiple viewings of the trailer, only further increasing excitement for the April 16th release date, which includes the ability to watch it at home on HBO Max.

10  Kabal

Kabal MK movie

More than ten characters from the video games show up in the trailer and are even directly referenced by name. Kabal also shows up for a few brief moments, but most people would miss him if they blinked at the wrong moment. He is clearly visible for just a fraction of a second fighting Liu Kang. Additionally, he is the opponent in the shot showing Liu Kang summon a dragon made of flames.

9 Possibly Reptile

One shot in the trailer shows a camouflaged figure descending from the top left corner of the frame, slowly revealing itself. This is most likely the same figure Kano kills during a quick series of cuts at the end of the trailer.

All signs point to this character being Reptile, looking more reptilian than human. The more animal-like appearance feels more like the version of the character from Deadly Alliance, the first mainline game in the franchise not to release in arcades.

8 Outworld

Mortal kombat outworld 2021 film

Any Mortal Kombat fan knows the names of the realms by heart. With new technology comes new possibilities for portraying these realms. The trailer gives a small glimpse of Outworld. Surprisingly, the alien terrain was mostly shot practically. The world is filled with wild geography, and it is great to see more movies taking advantage of the natural land to portray alien worlds.

7 Cole Is A New Character

Anybody who is not a fan of the games might assume every face in the trailer is an established member of the roster. While this is mostly true, Cole is the big outlier. He is an entirely new character. Director Simon McQuoid felt it was appropriate to add a new character because of how many personalities populate the lore. While a good point, some might feel it takes away an opportunity for us to see another beloved character brought to life.

6 Bi-Han Sub-Zero

Mortal Kombat Movie Gets Animated Posters For Several Fighters, Trailer Out Tomorrow

Many may not realize this, but there have been two Sub-Zeroes in the franchise. The Sub-Zero from the first game was significantly more antagonistic. Bi-Han eventually dies and returns as Noob Saibot. The Sub-Zero in the upcoming movie, played by Joe Taslim from The Raid and The Night Comes For Us, looks to be more like Bi-Han than Kuai Liang. We wonder if Bi-Han will die and return as Noob Saibot in a future film.

5 Less Well Known Moves From The Game

Scorpion Mortal kombat

Even those who never played the games recognize Scorpion's iconic spear and catchphrase. However, the trailer shows off several moves only those who played the series would recognize. Sub-Zero throwing Scorpion through a block of ice resembles a move from Mortal Kombat 11. Additionally, Kano does his iconic heart rip fatality. We also see Sonya shoot what appears to be her iconic energy bracelets in a quick shot during the end of the trailer.

4 That's Not How Jax Loses His Arms

Depending on the timeline, there are different ways and reasons why Jax has bionic arms. In the original timeline he replaces the arms of his own volition. In 2011's Mortal Kombat, Ermac rips off Jax's arms with his telekinesis in the Story Mode. The trailer shows Sub-Zero freeze and then shatter Jax's arms. Both are brutally painful displays, even by the series' standards. We wonder if the two will have a rematch during the course of the movie.

3 Is Kano A Friend?

Kano mortal kombat film

This detail will not seem abnormal to anybody who has not played the games, but fans recognize Kano as one of the most sinister villains from Earthrealm. In the film, however, he is seen side by side with many of the heroes. Perhaps they have an uneasy alliance during the tournament, joining forces for the sake of Earthrealm. If this is the case, we imagine he will betray the group either in this film or a potential sequel.

2 Mileena's Teeth

Mortal Kombat Trailer is Here and it looks brutally Amazing (fatalities included) Mileena

Mileena is in this movie, which is curious considering Kitana is nowhere in sight. One thing many fans have noticed is how the character's teeth are notably dull in comparison to her video game counterpart.

Perhaps there is a reason for this within the movie, or maybe the final effect will be different. Whatever the reason, she'll probably put those teeth to good use, fully taking advantage of the R-rating.

1 Mileena Might Already Die

In one of the quick edits during the trailer's end, one can see what appears to be Sonya Blade utilizing her energy bracelets and blowing a hole through some poor soul's stomach. Freeze the frame and look a little closer to see that this person, now lacking a stomach, is Mileena. While maybe a major spoiler, it at least tells us not to get too attached to Kitana's clone sister.
