It's hard to imagine that The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind will be turning 20 years old in the next few months. It's a Bethesda game worthy of a remaster, given that after two decades, it's aged visually, somewhat, even if the overall game itself is considered one of the best in the series. Furthermore, it's also still having mods made for it by the community, and one such modification has been in the works for nearly as long as the game's been out. So enormous is this project, that it's only halfway finished.
In a recent blog post on the developer website, a team of modders has been hard at work on Tamriel Rebuilt, a custom add-on for Morrowind which keeps the general look and feel of the third Elder Scrolls installment, but hugely expands the world to, essentially, incorporate the entire map of Tamriel, as the name implies. Now it seems as though it's around 50% complete, with the post saying that the team has finished "roughly half" of the mainland and exteriors.
The developer goes on to say that this year has seen a focus on content expansions, named "Dominions of Dust" and "Embers of Empire," adding that there is "much more in progress." For those who are interested in playing the mod, it's possible to download what the team has created so far. In fact, it's already being considered one of the best Morrowind mods out there. It is, to say the least, an enormously ambitious project for anyone to take on board, as it looks to bring all the regions from the lore into the 2002 setting.
Tamriel Rebuilt already has so much content, with the blog highlighting the roadmap of what's to come next during development. Given the age of the game now, it's not surprising that it does look a little dated, even with visual mods that look at improving the overall look. An official Morrowind remake wouldn't go amiss, but it's unlikely to happen, so it's nice knowing that projects like Tamriel Rebuilt are in the pipeline and keeping this 20-year-old classic going.
It's good for the fan base as well, who have been waiting in the wings for some time on the whereabouts of the next main game. With Elder Scrolls 6 still years away from completion, the likes of Tamriel Rebuilt will fill the gap nicely by hugely expanding Morrowind and giving players reignited vim and desire to go ahead and reinstall this gem of an Elder Scrolls title.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is available for PC and on the original Xbox.
