Taking what could only be some type of bardic inspiration, Steam's Mordhau includes a lute as a selectable weapon. And while it is not as effective as other weapons, creative players have found ways to use it in the battlefield alongside other weapons such as the Frying Pan. For those interested in using it out on the battlefield, here's how to use and play the lute.

First, players will need to equip it from the home screen to a preferred mercenary. By selecting the armory in the top left corner, players will be able to create a custom mercenary or select a pre-made one. Customizing either will allow Mordhau players to change armor, appearance, and weapon loadouts, with the latter being where players will equip the Lute. It only costs 1 gear point, so other weapons like the aforementioned Frying Pan or the Arming Sword can still be equipped.

To use the lute as a weapon, players can tap "R" for the alternative weapon mode and hit other players with it. However, it's worth mentioning that this is more of a cosmetic item than a weapon, so this isn't the most recommended way to use the lute in Mordhau (though it does add an element of hilarity).

To play the lute as a musical instrument, Mordhau players will be able to cycle through the weapon loadout using the number keys and equip the lute via this method. The left mouse button, right mouse button, and moving the mouse wheel up and down can all be used to create different musical notes and take on an inspiring, bardic role on the battlefield. Players can even tap "V" to unleash a battle cry.

However, several Mordhau players may have realized that some others have been able to play recognizable tunes such as the "DOOM song" or "Yakety Sax." For those interested in taking their lute capabilities beyond the notes available in the game, players will need to download LuteBot and use MIDI, with a helpful tutorial on how to do so found here.

Alternatively, for those who do not want to be upfront with a sword or playing the Bard with a lute, there is also the Engineer class. With a little know-how, there is a way to use this class to build a ballista in Mordhau, so whatever the player's preference, there are multiple ways to play.

Mordhau is out now for PC.
