One of the best things about Mordhau is the wide array of weapons that are available to players. Whether they are battling it out in PvP mode or fighting off waves of enemies in Horde mode, anything from Lutes to massive Pole Axes can be used.

That being said, there are some weapons in Mordhau that serve the player far more effectively in battle. The best Mordhau weapons are those that just about any average player can pick up and wield with relative efficiency. As opponents can wear different levels of armor, the best weapons in Mordhau should also do decent damage against all types of protection. In PvP, weapons also have a loadout cost, and this should be taken into consideration.

Updated July 15, 2023 by Joe Grantham: With hit medieval slasher Mordhau finally making its way to consoles, there has never been a better time to properly examine the Mordhau's best weapons. While there are certainly a few silly weapons in the game, the sheer number of deadly weapons from ranged bows and heavy-handed pole axes to nimble swords and falchions, makes ranking them no easy task.

Every weapon has its advantages and disadvantages, especially considering they all cost varying loadout points, and certain players will excel with certain weapon types. Nevertheless, a few examples stand out as clearly the best weapons in Mordhau.

18 Estoc

Mordhau Estoc Sword
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 18
  • Head Damage: 100/70/66/50
  • Torso Damage: 70/55/51/40
  • Leg Damage: 60/50/41/37

The Estoc is a sword in Mordhau that is all about thrusting, rather than slashing. It has an extremely thin blade that tapers down to a terrifying point, which players should aim to stick between the vulnerable parts of the opponent's armor. This means that proficiency with the Estoc is all about aim and patience, repeatedly hitting an armored enemy on their plate mail won't do much.

With that in mind, it is usually a weapon best wielded by heavily armored players who can afford to take a few hits now and again. If players happen to mount a horse while wielding an Estoc, they can even couch it like a lance which makes sense given the sword's shape and purpose.

17 Falchion

Mordhau Falchion Sword
  • Weapon Type: One-Handed
  • Cost: 8
  • Head Damage: 100/72/56/49
  • Torso Damage: 70/52/41/38
  • Leg Damage: 60/5036/28

While the Falchion isn't technically one of the best weapons in Mordhau in its own right, the fact that it only costs 8 loadout points makes it incredibly cost-efficient, and it can also be used as a backup weapon in various builds.

It is a fast-hitting short ranged weapon that excels in close-quarter combat, especially on the Mordhau maps with plenty of enclosed places such as small buildings or tight alleyways. Funnily enough, the Falchion can also be thrown, which can occasionally come in handy, especially as players will usually have another primary weapon to switch back to.

16 Sledgehammer

Mordhau Sledgehammer
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 100/100/75/65
  • Torso Damage: 80/70/60/50
  • Leg Damage: 70/60/50/40

Despite being a peasant weapon and thus requiring the Peasant perk to be equipped, the Sledgehammer is actually an incredibly deadly weapon in the right hands. If players are accurate with their swings and manage to hit heads, they will one-shot enemies with no or light armor.

This makes the Sledgehammer ideal for the early and middle stages of Horde mode where players can chain together headshots on the waves of enemies. This can then be swapped out for an even better Maul if players wish to continue with a similar play style. The Sledgehammer also has great stamina drain, which can be useful versus heavily armored brutes. Despite its size, the Sledgehammer can also be thrown like a few other weapons in Mordhau.

15 Crossbow

Mordhau Crossbow
  • Weapon Type: Ranged
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 110/100/67/65
  • Torso Damage: 60/50/42/40
  • Leg Damage: 50/40/35/31

For players who would rather kill their enemies from range rather than get up close and personal, the Crossbow is one of the best options. In the hands of players with great aim, it will even do more headshot damage than the Longbow.

Where it falls short is in how long it takes to reload and players will actually be forced to look down at the ground during the animation. For this reason, players can role-play as a Genoese Crossbowman and take a Pavise Shield into battle with them. This can then be placed into the ground to hide behind while reloading.

14 Heavy Handaxe

Mordhau Heavy Handaxe
  • Weapon Type: One-Handed
  • Cost: 9
  • Head Damage: 100/100/68/50
  • Torso Damage: 75/62/53/40
  • Leg Damage: 65/52/43/35

Seeing as it only costs 9 gear points, the Heavy Handaxe is an extremely underrated weapon in Mordhau, especially against unarmored opponents. It does however have a fairly slow attack animation and gets outranged by many weapons.

One of the best things about the Heavy Handaxe is that despite primarily being a weapon, it can also function as a tool for repairing barriers. This is particularly useful in Horde mode, which is similar to Zombie mode in Call of Duty games.

13 Longbow

Mordhau Longbow
  • Weapon Type: Ranged
  • Cost: 33
  • Head Damage: 100/100/54/50
  • Torso Damage: 70/50/36/34
  • Leg Damage: 50/40/27/25

Although the Longbow has an extremely high gear cost of 33 points, leaving little to no room for armor or perks, there is nothing like feeling the power of this mighty weapon. It's one of the best weapons in Mordhau and a must-have for fans of ranged combat.

How effective this weapon is will depend on the player, as, naturally, aim is everything. With a faster reload time than the Crossbow, players do have more freedom to move around the map, and reposition after each shot.

12 Bastard Sword

Mordhau Bastard Sword
  • Weapon Type: One-Handed or Two-Handed
  • Cost: 12
  • Head Damage: 90/80/42/37
  • Torso Damage: 75/65/32/27
  • Leg Damage: 60/60/27/22

The Bastard Sword is one of the more flexible swords in Mordhau as it can be wielded in either one or two hands. Unlike bigger swords, it can therefore be used alongside a trusty shield.

Although the Bastard Sword, sometimes known as a hand-and-a-half sword, doesn't have the best damage, it does have fast swings that are hard to keep an eye on.

11 Mace

Mordhau Mace
  • Weapon Type: One-Handed
  • Cost: 11
  • Head Damage: 103/102/71/61
  • Torso Damage: 53/52/51/50
  • Leg Damage: 52/50/48/46

The Mace is a one-handed weapon that deals blunt force damage, making it particularly effective against armored foes. However, because of its short range, players will need to close the gap on targets.

Hilariously the Mace can even be thrown using the Alt attack, and as funny as this may look, this interaction can come in useful in certain situations. It's this kind of versatility that makes the Mace one of the best weapons in Mordhau, and also one of the most fun to use.

10 Pole Axe

Mordhau Poleaxe Weilding Knight
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 18
  • Head Damage: 100/78/53/48
  • Torso Damage: 70/63/38/35
  • Leg Damage: 65/53/36/34

The Pole Axe makes the cut of the best weapons in Mordgau thanks to its excellent reach and versatility. Against single opponents, the Pole Axe can give the player room to kite their enemy and stay away from any weapon they may be wielding.

When facing groups, the Pole Axe turns the player into a pinwheel of death capable of sweeping and kiting with brutal efficiency. The reason it doesn’t rank higher is that there exists another weapon with equal reach and better performance; however, for those starting out, the Pole Axe is not a bad option.

9 Maul

Mordhau Maul Fighters
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 100/100/100/100
  • Torso Damage: 85/83/67/66
  • Leg Damage: 75/73/66/65

Players that main with the Maul have something of a love/hate relationship with it. If wielded properly, it can deal brutal damage and can even take down heavily armored targets with a single well-placed blow.

But to do this players need to account for slow swing speed and bad reach. Tanky builds will get the most mileage out of this weapon, but even then, it will take some practice to truly master. Rest assured, once you’re familiar with this weapon’s quirks, you’ll be a terrifying foe on the battlefield.

8 Messer

Mordhau Desert Warrior With Messer
  • Weapon Type: One-Handed or Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 100/75/62/48
  • Torso Damage: 70/60/52/40
  • Leg Damage: 60/50/42/34

The Messer is a weapon that certainly makes a mess of things. It has the reach of a Greatsword and delivers damage that exceeds that weapon. The tradeoff for this power is a slower attack speed.

At times, this weapon will feel like a Maul with a blade and slightly better stats. Like the Maul, the Messer will take some practice to get the most out of it. Beginners may want something a little more user-friendly, but experienced players with some patience will find this to be a useful but tricky weapon to wield.

7 Battle Axe

Mordhau Battle Axe Warrior
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 100/100/68/60
  • Torso Damage: 75/62/53/45
  • Leg Damage: 65/52/43/35

The Battle Axe has a longer reach than most weapons in the swords and axes categories. It’s not as long as a Pole Axe, but players will find it easier to stay out of the enemy’s range while still striking back. The damage could be a little stronger, but it does the job.

This is a nice weapon for players who find themselves frustrated with the limited range of the Maul and want something just a bit faster than the Messer. With a Bloodlust-based build, this weapon will carve through enemies.

6 War Axe

Mordhau War Axe
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 130/105/80/55
  • Torso Damage: 100/75/65/50
  • Leg Damage: 80/65/55/45

The War Axe is very similar to the Battle Axe. The main difference is that it’s a bit shorter than the Battle Axe, but it gains extra damage and a nudge in attack speed. Those differences make it arguably better than the Battle Axe.

In fact, this is arguably the strongest axe in Mordhau in terms of versatility and utility. If players are good at blocking, dodging, or simply taking damage, then the War Axe will serve them better than the Battle Axe.

5 Throwing Knives

Mordhau Throwing Knife
  • Weapon Type: Ranged
  • Cost: 4
  • Head Damage: 95/65/35/30
  • Torso Damage: 55/50/20/15
  • Leg Damage: 40/35/5/5

Ranged weapons tend to be overlooked in this game and this isn’t entirely without merit. They cost ammo and don’t deal as much damage. There is one ranged weapon however that rises above the rest and can even be more useful than many of the melee weapons.

Throwing Knives are great for quickly taking out unarmored opponents thanks to their decent damage. Even against heavily armored foes, they’re handy thanks to their fast priming and throwing speeds. Throwing Knives also don’t cost many gear points, meaning they can slot into most builds. They will never be someone's main weapon, but they are arguably the most useful ranged weapons in the game.

4 Greatsword

mordhau - greatsword
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 100/80/60/48
  • Torso Damage: 75/65/43/38
  • Leg Damage: 65/55/34/34

The Greatsword is a fantastic weapon for various situations. It has a relatively fast attack for its size, offers different combat styles, and deals great damage. It also doesn’t cost many points allowing for better armor.

If players are unsure which weapon they should be using, the Greatsword makes for a great default choice. In fact, many of the more experienced players cite this powerful sword as their weapon of choice. Learning to use this weapon will benefit the player no matter their skill level.

3 Zweihander

Mordhau Zweihander
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 24
  • Head Damage: 115/100/70/50
  • Torso Damage: 100/85/55/40
  • Leg Damage: 70/65/40/39

The Zweihander is essentially a very long Greatsword. As such it has a greater reach and more damage potential in battle. A player trained with this weapon and thick armor can be very dangerous on the frontlines of combat.

It does cost a bit more and will prevent the player from wearing as much armor as they would with other weapons. It can also be slow at times. However, players familiar with its speed and comfortable going in with less armor than usual can quickly cut their enemies down with this weapon.

2 Eveningstar

Mordhau Eveningstar
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 102/100/77/65
  • Torso Damage: 62/59/57/55
  • Leg Damage: 57/50/45/45

For many players, the Eveningstar is the best weapon in the game. It has incredible stamina management, and it takes quite a bit to disarm an opponent wielding this weapon. With a full strike, it can also kill even the most heavily armored units in two hits.

It does have some limitations in team fights and doesn’t have the best range. But for players dueling or bashing it out on the frontlines, this may be the best option available to them.

1 Halberd

Mordhau Halberd
  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 24
  • Head Damage: 115/100/70/48
  • Torso Damage: 100/75/55/40
  • Leg Damage: 85/65/45/37

An argument could be made that the Halberd is the single best weapon in this multiplayer game. It has excellent reach, high damage, and is very versatile. In fact, many players will intentionally train with this weapon to be able to handle just about any threat.

That range is one of the reasons it’s the best weapon. Whether fighting a single opponent or a group of people, the Halberd is good at keeping foes at a distance while still dealing damage. Many experienced frontline fighters use this weapon and for good reason.

Mordhau is available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
