As Moon Knight steps aside to make room for Ms. Marvel, the reigning aesthetic for Disney Plus' current MCU series changes dramatically. However, some newly surfaced artwork shows the Egyptian superhero had a drastically different look in early drafts for the show.

Marvel Studios' Moon Knight made the MCU dip its toes in the thriller and horror genres as directors Mohamed Diab and Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead used their experiences to make audiences immerse themselves into the world of Marc Spector's fractured personality. Funnily enough, in his beginnings, Moon Knight was often likened to being Marvel's answer to Batman, and though Oscar Isaac's Steven Grant personality is a far cry from the billionaire playboy he is in the comics, those ideas did influence this high-tech concept art.

In this case, Visual Development Supervisor at Marvel Studios Jackson Sze has been sharing some of his early work in Moon Knight that eventually evolved into the definitive version of the hero fans got to see. As the artist explains, this version of the protagonist was made during the pre-production stage, and it certainly does end up coming off as more sci-fi than anything Moon Knight is typically associated with. That said, this early concept art still has the added flair of his signature crescent moon iconography.

Sze is right, as this unused version of the costume looks more like something Bruce Wayne came up with rather than the powers granted to Marc by an ancient Egyptian deity. In fact, among the posts shared by Sze on his personal Instagram account (@jwsze), fans will find many early versions of what would eventually become the gods Khonshu, Ammit, and Taweret. Of course, these three eventually got their chance to shine in the show’s finale.

Any Marvel fan is bound to get a kick out of Sze's portfolio since the artist regularly posts examples of his work in other productions such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, WandaVision, Avengers: Endgame, and Hawkeye. One show on which Sze doesn’t appear to have worked on is Ms. Marvel, whose unique visual identity is possibly what helps it stand out the most among other MCU content.

One big question many have on their heads is whether this fantastic art direction will get another chance to shine, as Moon Knight's ending was more ambiguous than what some fans would have liked. As it stands, Isaac seems to lack a clear path to connect the rest of the MCU, but maybe a Moon Knight appearance in Marvel's Midnight Suns can boost the character's appeal so he gets a second season.

Moon Knight is now available on Disney Plus.
