This article contains spoilers for the finale of Moon Knight.

Moon Knight has turned out to be a surprise hit for Disney Plus, even considering its already elevated exposure due to its Marvel pedigree. So fans are understandably clamoring for more after that adrenaline-filled finale. But with no official word yet regarding the series' future, what can audiences expect going forward?

Well, according to some of the folks in charge of the Marvel Studios show, it might not be the same situation as other shows like Loki and Hawkeye, where follow-ups and spinoffs were announced shortly after or even before the shows aired. Moon Knight season 2 almost sounds like a sure thing after the way things left off. It's no secret that Moon Knight ended on what definitely felt like a cliffhanger stinger thanks to the death of Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow at the hands of Marc Spector's third personality, the ruthless Jake Lockley. But the real question is, will it be resolved somewhere else entirely?

Egyptian director Mohamed Diab, who helmed several episodes of Moon Knight, was pretty open about what he knows when asked by Deadline about another season. "We don't know if there's a next season," Diab said plainly. "Marvel doesn't go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero's journey... I'm kept in the dark, just like the fans." As popular as the show was, particularly due to its well-praised depiction of mental illness and trauma, it appears as though Marvel Studios still might not respond the way most studios would.

Grant Curtis, who served alongside Diab as executive producer on Moon Knight, backed up his statements. "Where Moon Knight lands in MCU after this, I actually don't know," Curtis admitted, "As a fan, I want to know, because Oscar [Isaac] created such an engaging, emotional performance that people want to see more of the Steven-Marc-Jake story." While the existence of Jake Lockley as yet another personality in the head of Isaac's main character was teased during the show, his ultimate reveal at the end likely felt to many like it opened the door to a definite second season. But apparently, things aren't that cut and dry in Marvel land.

Aside from Jake's introduction, the final episode also saw Layla (May Calamawy) accept a pact to become the avatar of Egyptian goddess Tawaret (Fun side fact, Tawaret's portrayal in Moon Knight as a nurse appears to mirror her appearance in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson book series). This resulted in her becoming a superhero just like Isaac's titular Moon Knight, inspiring a touching scene where a young awestruck Egyptian girl asked Layla if she was an Egyptian superhero, to which she responded "I am." Even aside from the story possibilities going forward, more diverse representation in mainstream media like that is certainly an excellent reason to keep the train running.

However things turn out, it seems pretty likely that the story of Moon Knight won't end here. Whether it continues in another season, a movie, or someone else's tale entirely, fans can probably rest easy knowing that there will be more. After all, it would be tragic if audiences never got to see Layla kicking major butt again.
