By the time players reach the endgame in Monster Hunter World, they should have their build pretty well figured out and know the weakness of the various monsters in the game. However, not everything about the endgame is made explicitly clear, like how to acquire tempered monster investigations.

While most Monster Hunter World players will still have some optional quests to clean up as part of the endgame and in order to collect every mantle, by and large tempered investigations are where they will spend the bulk of their time. Tempered monster investigations are a great source for jewels/decorations and at the higher Hunter Rank levels (HR 50+) they will offer stones for armor and weapon augmentation.

So how do Monster Hunter World players get tempered investigations? The key is to track tempered monsters for as long as possible without engaging them. Although breaking the tempered monster’s parts will trigger the ‘Investigation Added’ message, these investigations will not be tempered.

To the best of our knowledge, the only way to get specifically tempered investigations is to track tempered monsters. Unfortunately, each footstep (or leftover marking) tracked only offers a very small chance of earning an investigation.

On top of that, the monster that players track will determine what type of investigation they unlock. Threat Level 1 monsters can only unlock investigations for Threat Level 1 tempered monsters, and the same is true for Threat Level 2 and eventually tempered elder dragons.

It’s a fairly complicated process but it’s important for players to know how to get more tempered investigations while they still have some active. Players can even farm tempered monster tracks by loading into the investigation, following the monster around until it stops, and then quitting. Keep repeating this process until an investigation pops.

There are also some set areas where specific tempered monster tracks appear in the open areas, so players can chart a path and pick up tracks along the way. Check out the video below for some tips on where to find tempered monster tracks for Threat Level 2 monsters.

Monster Hunter World is out now for PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version releases later this year.
