The progression loop in Monster Hunter: World is all about getting better gear to beat tougher monsters, and tempered elder dragons are up toward the top of that list. Finding investigations to track these powerful beasts in Monster Hunter: World can be tricky, but this guide should help players on their quest to be the best monster hunter around.

Beat the Story

To gain access to tempered monsters, you first have to complete the main storyline. Take your time and have fun. Monster Hunter: World received its high review scores for a reason.

Reach Hunter Rank 49

After beating the main storyline, you’ll need to reach Hunter Rank 49. To do this, keep completing the quests provided to you – namely ones that involve hunting tempered monsters. These are all more powerful versions of the monsters encountered on your journey. These challenging foes will test your ability and resolve, so make sure to bring your best Monster Hunter gear to face them.

Track Kirin

Once you reach HR 49, you will have access to a quest that will ask you to hunt down a tempered Kirin, and here is where the farming comes in. You’ll need to track Kirin around and pick up the tracks they leave behind. This is what you’re going to be doing for a while, so be prepared. Keep following Kirin around and pick up the tracks, and every time you do there is a chance you’ll receive a new investigation for an elder dragon hunt. The investigations drop randomly, so it may take a bit to rack up some new investigations.

Rinse and Repeat

Once Kirin has stopped and therefore will leave no more tracks, do not attack it, but instead hit Return from Quest in your menu to save your investigation progress. Then load back into the Kirin hunt to resume track gathering. If you follow these steps, you should be able to rack up several tempered elder dragon investigations, which will get you on the right path to get the best armor sets in the game.

While this process is not as thrilling as hunting down glorious monsters, this will net you a lot of investigations to help you gear up faster. For tips and tricks in Monster Hunter: World and many other games, make sure to check out our guides section for much more.
