Earlier this week, Capcom revealed that it has shipped upwards of 5 million copies of Monster Hunter World around the world. This impressive feat was also accomplished in the first three days of the game’s availability to the public, and if the game had launched on handheld consoles, this number is likely to have been higher. With that being said, Capcom’s action role-playing game has still managed to break a sales-related record.

Famitsu and Dengeki – two Japan-focused video game magazines – as well as Media Create, a Japanese company that analyzes Japan’s console gaming market, find that Monster Hunter World is the first PS4 title to break 1 million sales during its first week in Japan. Each company’s published figures truly speak to the high popularity of the game, as each number is rather impressive, but it is noteworthy that each finding does not include digital sales.

Famitsu published its findings at 1,350,412 physical copies sold in the first three days after launch, making Capcom’s overall record much more impressive. Also, Famitsu put the possible sellthrough estimation (inventory received versus actually sold) at 80 to 100%, further estimating that the grand total could exceed 2 million sales with the inclusion of digital sales. Moreover, Dengeki’s findings are very similar to Famitsu (1,333,602 copies, 95% sellthrough rate, 2 million with digital sales).

The magazines’ numbers match up with Media Create, with the analyst company listing 1,245,169 physical copies as posted at 4Gamer. It lists the sellthrough rate at 92.07% and reveals that Monster Hunter World has outsold Monster Hunter XX and Monster Hunter Tri. The company also expects the game to have a long sales period due to the multi-player aspects of the game. While the above analyses deal with the PS4-version of the game, it is worth noting that the performance of the game on PS4 and Xbox One is competitive.

With Monster Hunter World’s increasing popularity, the game may continue to break records. If these numbers are indication, then it definitely seems that Monster Hunter World is 2018’s first big game release. For gamers still wary about picking up a copy, check out our review.

Monster Hunter World is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and will launch some time in Fall 2018 for PC.
