Monster hunting is at an all-time high, thanks in large part to last year's mega-hit, Monster Hunter World as well as the recently released free-to-play game Dauntless. Content for Monster Hunter World has recently dried up a bit, with the last couple of events featuring Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher franchise as well as celebrating the launch anniversary came and went months ago. New content is on the way however, as a trailer for the Iceborne expansion revealed new story details.

The four-minute trailer focused on new story beats that players will be experiencing inside of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne once the expansion arrives later this year. Players can get a glimpse at the new base of Seliana established in the snowy environment called Hoarfrost Reach. Following the end of the main campaign, the Research Commission follows a group of Legiana, not only discovering this new land of snow and ice but unveiling a new mystery to solve alongside plenty of new and strange creatures to battle.

Considering this is a Monster Hunter trailer, the footage also shows off plenty of new creatures that players will be hunting. While players have already seen the likes of Banbaro and Beotodus in a previous stream, the trailer finally gives players a good look at previously hinted at monsters like Nargacuga, Glavenus, and Tigrex. The large dragon looking Glavenus can be seen at the end staring down the protagonist, while the heavily rumored Tigrex is finally revealed in full.

Players can also get a glimpse of the menacing Elder Dragon Velkhana, which many fans have already pegged to be the expansion's main antagonist similar to Nergigante in the campaign. Velkhana appears to have a lot of cold based attacks like an ice beam and being able to summon ice spikes from the ground.

Capcom is positioning the Iceborne expansion to be more than a simple update. In addition to the new story and monsters, this expansion is also bringing plenty of new gameplay mechanics to enhance the player's available options when out hunting. Examples include new weapons and combos, being able to use the slinger when the main weapon is drawn or using a new tool called the Clutch Claw to grapple onto a monster. Longtime player requested features like Master Rank is also coming and offers a brand-new quest tier that further ramps up the monster difficulty.

Monster Hunter World is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Iceborne expansion will launch on September 6 for PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC release to follow in 2020.
