E3 may not officially start until later in the week, but Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live event aired today and showed off many new game reveals, announcements, trailers, and more. One of the games shown off during the livestreamed presentation was none other than Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, Capcom's spin-off title that is set to launch next month for PC and Switch.

The Monster Hunter Stories series originated on the Nintendo 3DS a couple of years ago, and is a bit different from the mainline Monster Hunter franchise, as it's a turn-based RPG instead of an action RPG. Players control a character that's known as a Monster Rider that can form strong bonds with iconic Monster Hunter creatures and then use those creatures for battle against other characters and monsters.

The trailer is sure to excite many fans of the series, as it shows off some new characters, story moments, and more. Compared to the mainline series, this spin-off is more focused on the narrative and characters. Players will follow a linear story as they fight against monsters instead of grinding for loot and getting the best armor sets, as players do in a game like Monster Hunter Rise.

The trailer opens up by showing off the new legendary flightless Rathalos that end up hatching from the main character's egg. This time around, players are in control of the grandchild of Red, and he teams up with a Wyverian girl named Ena who then must leave the island of Hakolo. Of course, having a rare monster in their hands ends up being trouble for them, as it seems that there are opposing forces that are trying to take the Rathalos away from them by using force.

This new trailer was focused on the cinematics and the narrative, but there's sure to be more gameplay shown off very soon. As a matter of fact, as the game comes closer to launch, Capcom is still planning to pull out all of the marketing stops for the upcoming RPG. Capcom is having a live showcase during E3 2021 on June 14 and is planning on sharing more news on Monster Hunter Stories 2, as well as Monster Hunter Rise, Resident Evil Village, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin launches for the Nintendo Switch and PC on July 9th, 2021.
