While fans should've expected there to be new weapons in Monster Hunter Rise's 2.0 update that were based on the new monsters added, there's another weapon to watch out for. The new sword and shield, called the Ninja Sword, may not look especially remarkable besides the noticeable lack of a shield, but it's one of Monster Hunter Rise's most interesting weapons mechanically.

Kagero's Trial

In order to even be able to forge the Ninja Sword and its Hi Ninja Sword upgrade, players will need to accept the request entitled Kagero's Trial. Those who have their HR cap unlocked after defeating the final boss should make their way over to Kagero to accept this request.

The request itself is actually fairly simple. Players simply need to capture a high rank Magnamalo. It's honestly quite probable that players have already done this throughout the course of the game up until this point. However, unfortunately, this quest won't retroactively count as completed because of that. Another Magnamalo will need to be captured. Kagero doesn't give a specific quest so any Magnamalo will do as long as it's high rank.

If players have managed to make it to HR 8 without capturing a monster, then what they will need to do is take a trap, pitfall or shock, and tranq bombs into a fight with Magnamalo. Pitfall traps can be crafted with nets purchased from Rondine and a trap tool purchased from Kagero. A shock trap can be crafted with a thunderbug and a trap tool. Tranq bombs can be purchased from Kagero. Nets and tranq bombs can also be crafted, but they're the easiest to purchase.

Then in a hunt, once the Magnamalo icon in the top right of the screen gains a blue monster head icon underneath it, or a palico says a monsters is weak enough to be captured, a trap needs to be placed down. Once the monster activates the trap, two tranq bombs need to be thrown at it. Tranq bombs and traps can technically be used in reverse order, but it's generally a better bet to make sure the monster activates the trap before using the tranq bombs.

Regardless, once players have captured a Magnamalo, they just need to return to Kagero and they will be given the blueprint for the Ninja Sword.

Crafting the Ninja Sword

In order to craft the Ninja Sword, players will need the following:

  • 3 Kamura Tickets
  • 1 unit of Elder Dragon Blood
  • 2 Magnamalo Scutes+
  • 2 Bazelgeuse Wings

In order to get Kamura tickets, players will need to complete village quests. Unfortunately, it can take quite a few village quests before Fugen will award the player with Kamura tickets. However, some players report be rewarded some after completing high rank rampages like the new Apex Rathalos rampage for example.

Elder dragon blood is a quest reward from any elder dragon fight, but can also be occasionally obtained via shiny drops that elder dragons leave behind.

Magnamalo scutes, as the name would imply, come from hunting Magnamalo. They have an 8% chance of dropping from completing a Magnamalo hunt. They have an 18% chance of being awarded when Magnamalo is captured, and an 8% chance of being picked up as a shiny drop. The best way to get this particular resource however is to break Magnamalo's back during the fight as this has an 80% chance of rewarding the player with a scute+.

Bazelgeuse wings have a 12% chance of dropping when completing a Bazelgeuse hunt. Additionally, they have a 29% chance of being awarded when Bazelgeuse is captured. However, similar to the Magnamalo scutes, the best way to get a Bazelgeuse wing is to break its wings, which results in a 65% chance of being awarded a wing at the end of the fight.

Once players have all the materials they can craft the Ninja Sword. It has an attack of 190, no element, three level 1 decoration slots, and a lot of green sharpness. What makes this weapon unique, however, is it has 50% affinity and when it's upgraded, that number gets even higher.

Crafting the Hi Ninja Sword

To upgrade the Ninja Sword into the Hi Ninja Sword, players will need the following:

  • 1 High Commendation
  • 2 Chameleos Spikes
  • 2 Daora Horns+
  • 2 Teostra Horns+
A high commendation can be obtained from completing a 7 star high rank quest with multiple monsters as the target. It also is awarded when completing elder dragon hunts.

The rest of the materials require hunting the newly added elder dragons. Chameleos is available to hunters first at HR 20. A spike has a 21% chance of being carved and an 80% chance of being rewarded for breaking Chameleos' horn.

At HR 30, Kushala Daora is available to fight. Daora horns have a similar drop rate to the Chameleos spikes. There is a 17% chance of them being carved and an 80% chance of being awarded for breaking Kushala Daora's head.

Finally, at HR 40, players can fight Teostra. Teostra Horns+ are acquired the same way as the previous two materials. The drop rates are a little lower, however, with an 8% chance of being carved and a 72% chance of being awarded for breaking Teostra's head.

Players will probably need to fight each elder dragon at least twice to get all the required materials, but once they have them, they can upgrade the Ninja Sword. The Hi Ninja Sword, like the standard Ninja Sword, does not have any element and has three level 1 decoration slots. However, its attack is increased to 200, it gets more green sharpness and its affinity is boosted to 100%.

This means that every hit with the Hi Ninja Sword will be a critical hit. This also means players don't have to run the weakness exploit skill when using this weapon and can focus on other things, perhaps the bludgeoner skill since at level 3, it activates with green sharpness which the Hi Ninja Sword has plenty of. Regardless, it's a unique weapon that players will want to consider picking up.
