Last year was a massive one for Capcom and its Monster Hunter franchise. Not only did Monster Hunter World become a massive hit and break all sorts of sales records for the company, but new information regarding a movie adaptation of the long running franchise was confirmed as well. While there's still a ton fans don't know about Paul W.S. Anderson's Monster Hunter movie, the first official teaser trailer has finally leaked, giving fans their best look at what's to come.

The trailer is fairly brief but it provides some new insight into the movie including characters, locations, and even a few of the monsters the team will be going up against. The trailer opens with a sweeping wide shot of a desert area with a character looking at a strange light in the distance, perhaps the portal that brought the military team to this dimension in the first place. The trailer shows quick cuts of Milla Jovovich's character Captain Natalie Artemis, as well as supporting characters played by Ron Perlman and Tony Jaa. As for the iconic monsters, only two were briefly shown including the Diablos bursting through the sand and the final shot that depicts the iconic Monster Hunter wyvern Rathalos charging through a wall of fire.

According to text included with the post, the footage appeared as part of the Shanghai International Film Festival. According to the premise, the Monster Hunter movie depicts a United Nations military squad entering a portal to another world that they soon discover is inhabited by giant monsters. Soon after arriving, the military joins forces with the inhabitants of this world to prevent the monsters from using the portals to go to Earth. The movie is still without a solid release date, though it appears to be on track for a 2020 debut.

For those who may be a bit disappointed that the movie takes some liberties with its plot, Capcom is planning to launch its first major expansion for Monster Hunter World in September. The Iceborne expansion not only adds a new region to explore as well as new monsters to hunt, but it also adds a bunch of quality of life improvements as well. Two gameplay changes in particular are the Clutch Claw gadget, which enables the player to grapple over to the monster or even lure one over into a trap. The other big change is the Raider Ride ability, letting the player essentially call a small monster over to ride as a mount.

Monster Hunter is targeting a 2020 release in theaters.
