Digital artist "comics_abomonation" recently posted an original piece of fan art to the Marvel Studios Reddit board depicting WandaVision's Monica Rambeau as one of her comic book superhero alter-egos, Photon.
Monica Rambeau has recently been featured on the Disney Plus show WandaVision, working for the secretive government agency S.W.O.R.D as she attempts to unravel the mystery of Wanda Maximoff's sitcom-style reality. In WandaVision she’s portrayed by actress Teyonah Parris, but Rambeau actually made her live-action debut in the 2019 film Captain Marvel as a much younger version of the character. In that movie, Monica is the daughter of Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau, an old friend of Captain Marvel, a.k.a Carol Danvers. Since that film is set in the mid-’90s, Rambeau is only a child and is played by actress Akira Akbar instead of Parris.
Although she’s just a child in Captain Marvel, fans of the comics would immediately recognize the name of Monica Rambeau. In fact, in the comics, Rambeau was the second person to dawn the name Captain Marvel after the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, back when Carol Danvers still went by the name Ms. Marvel. She would even go on to lead the Avengers at one point.

First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16, created by Roger Stern and John Romita Jr, Monica Rambeau gained superpowers after she was bombarded by extra-dimensional energies, giving her the power to transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum. At one point in her comics run, Rambeau lost her powers and hung up the cape, retiring from the superhero life. However, she eventually regained her powers and returned with a new name, Photon, after passing on the Captain Marvel title to Mar-Vell’s son, Genis-Vell. In the years since Rambeau has taken on other aliases such as Pulsar and, most recently, Spectrum.
On WandaVision, Rambeau was recently seen being “bombarded” by Wanda Maximoff’s energy powers, sending her flying through the sitcom reality and back into the real world. Many fans have speculated that this event is what will give Rambeau her powers, allowing her to become Photon in the MCU.
Considering her mother's nickname in the Air Force was Maria “Photon” Rambeau, it seems likely that this will someday come to fruition. She’s already confirmed to be in Brie Larson's Captain Marvel 2, and who knows, maybe she’ll take up her original title of Captain Marvel and lead whatever new generation of Avengers that remains to be seen.
