In an effort to capitalize on the growing success of the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises, Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 3 will also be heading to the Nintendo DS. This comes a few days after news that Modern Warfare 3 would also be releasing for the Wii.

Details are sparse at the moment regarding how the DS version will differentiate from the console and PC releases, though gamers should look to previous portable releases in the franchise's history to get a peek at what they can expect.

The DS version of Modern Warfare 3 will be developed by n-Space, who were also responsible for the previous portable installments of Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. Seeing as how the developer has a lot of experience with both the DS and the Call of Duty franchise, fans looking to get their Call of Duty fix while on the go should expect Modern Warfare 3 to be properly optimized for the platform.

This now means that at least four developers are currently working on Modern Warfare 3, with Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer games working on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, Treyarch working on the Wii version and n-Space developing the DS title.

No release date has been given for either the Wii or DS versions, though it is likely that Activision will want to capitalize on Modern Warfare 3's hype and release it simultaneously with the HD console and PC versions. If so, this will be the first time that the Modern Warfare franchise has landed on Nintendo's consoles at the same time as its HD brethren. The Wii version of Call of Duty 4 (dubbed, Call of Duty: Reflex Edition) launched two years after the title's initial release on the HD platforms.

Modern Warfare 3 DS 2

While this info is no doubt good news for gamers who do not own any of the HD platforms, it is upsetting to hear that Modern Warfare 3 will not be developed for the 3DS as well. Many have expressed their disappointment with the 3DS' current library of games, and Modern Warfare 3 would definitely be a welcome addition to the line up - as well as help boost sales on the console.

Modern Warfare 3 lands November 8th, 2011 for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC - though the Wii and DS versions do not yet have firm release dates. Gamers can expect the title to be the center of attention this holiday season with Call of Duty headests, the obligatory collector's editions and Call of Duty Elite all set to take both time and cash from many a gamer. Will you be picking up Modern Warfare 3?
