With the game set to release in just over a week, there shouldn’t be much mystery surrounding Modern Warfare 3, yet there still is. While gamers have previously been treated to an extensive breakdown of the globetrotting story, many elements of the game’s multiplayer have been kept secret.

In an effort to take some of that mystery away, a series of top-down images have been released that detail the ins and outs of Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer maps. Yes, they don’t give any sense of setting or context, but it should give gamers a great idea of each map’s layout.

Having played Dome, Resistance, and Village during Call of Duty XP, I can vouch for each map’s creativity and variety, but that's only a small slice of the rather large selection. While some Modern Warfare 3 maps are going to deliver that trademarked urban warfare, there are a few rural locales thrown in to keep things interesting.

What’s most exciting about these overhead maps is how Call of Duty Elite plans to use them to gamers’ advantage. Detailed in their ‘Improve’ trailer, Beachhead Studio will be treating gamers to extensive breakdowns of each map including the fastest routes to objectives, and chokepoints for high intensity firefights. Now, with these images, players can actually get a jump on the competition by mapping out their own route to success.

Unfortunately, beyond the overhead images, we don’t know too much about Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer maps, aside from those that we have experienced firsthand or seen in trailers. The game does, however, have plenty of enthusiasm surrounding it, making full details on these multiplayer maps almost irrelevant. Gamers are going to be playing them, and they are going to be playing them for days.

From what you can glean, which of the 16 multiplayer maps are you most excited to play? How would you like to see Infinity Ward improve on map layout and design in future Modern Warfare 3 DLC?
