We all know the old adage, if it ain't broke don’t fix it, but when it comes to video game engines that typically isn’t the desire for gamers. While some engines, like the one utilized in the past couple Call of Duty titles, gets the job done, gamers have been clamoring for an update ever since MW2.

Though Black Ops did not do much to update the engine, many are hoping that in order to remain competitive with DICE, Infinity Ward will be using a new engine for Modern Warfare 3. Speaking on that exact topic, Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward revealed that the team has packed “a lot of cool stuff” into this year’s title.

While that doesn’t exactly point towards a new engine, the hope is that when we do finally get a peak at Modern Warfare 3 in action (which should take place at some point tonight) that the game will look much different than its predecessors. With so much focus being placed on Battlefield 3 and its Frostbite 2.0 engine, gamers everywhere want to see the same type of detail present in Call of Duty.

The only thing that Bowling really confirmed was that there is something engine related worth talking about, but they aren’t ready to talk about it at this point. More specifically he said:

@Sebianoti We haven't gone into detail on the engine yet but we've moved beyond the MW2 engine and added a lot of cool stuff for #MW3.

Read into that however you would like, but most gamers are going to assume that Infinity Ward is working hard to put the finishing touches on a game that utilizes a brand new, or at least an update of the Modern Warfare 2, engine. Unfortunately, Bowling himself has said that creating a new engine would be "counter productive" and would lead to a much longer development cycle. That doesn't mean Modern Warfare 3 won't have significant tweaks, just that the core engine gamers have been using since Modern Warfare will still be there in one form or another.

It has taken some time to get there, but gamers are just now beginning to understand that improvement of an engine oftentimes improves the experience for a game. Sure minute tweaks can be made here and there, and typically, if the property is solid, sales will continue to grow. But when it comes to Modern Warfare 3, a title that is really going to need to throw down this year, Infinity Ward better come out with something very impressive.

What type of "cool stuff" would you like to see on display in terms of Modern Warfare 3's graphics? Do you agree that graphics engines are a big selling point for games these days?

Modern Warfare 3 is believed to be releasing on November 8, 2011 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
