Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward have revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have 33 weapon platforms and a grand total of 51 unique weapons available at launch. Handily beating its 2019 predecessor, which had 39 weapons on release, Modern Warfare 2 aims to offer one of the most expansive weapon customization and handling experiences in the franchise.

One of the things that helps Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 stand out in regard to its weaponry is the newfangled weapon platform system. Weapon platforms are, in effect, firearm families sourced from a specific manufacturer or gunsmith, and leveraging them sets up a situation where Infinity Ward can introduce a variety of different sub-variants of a specific type of gun. A prime example is the Lachmann platform, which is Modern Warfare 2's Heckler & Koch equivalent, including the MP5, G3, HK33, and more.

According to Infinity Ward's latest pre-release blog post, Modern Warfare 2's Gunsmith will be remarkably expansive upon release. Namely, there will be a total of 33 disparate weapon platforms available in the game, allowing players to unlock up to 51 unique weapons. More specifically, there will be ten assault rifles, seven submachine guns, three sniper rifles, six marksman rifles, four battle rifles, six light machine guns, four shotguns, five sidearms, and four launchers. On top of these, players can also expect one melee secondary weapon and the infamous riot shield as well.

Infinity Ward hasn't gone into greater depth on the specifics of each weapon category and platform yet. Though fans have already compiled shortlists of possible Modern Warfare 2 launch weapons, none of the leaks list all 51 confirmed weapons, meaning that at least some of them will be a surprise. Moreover, this number is bound to grow over the course of the next two years, with the developer adding more standalone weapons and weapon platforms post-launch.

Modern Warfare 2's Gunsmith 2.0 should provide more than enough customization across the board, as even the game's limited-access beta showed off a comprehensive selection of weapon customization options available. Completionists will, however, need to give each platform a try, as it's been shown that certain attachments might be locked behind a particular weapon family's XP progression.

It's of course worth pointing out that Gunsmith itself likely won't be relevant during Modern Warfare 2's campaign early access period, as the customization system was a multiplayer-only feature in its 2019 predecessor. Multiplayer modes will unlock on the game's official release on October 28, while solo content will be available for pre-order owners starting on October 20.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
