Even though most Call of Duty players mainly focus on playing multiplayer game modes like Domination, Kill Confirmed, and Search & Destroy, some enjoy playing co-op with their friends or other COD players. So when Infinity Ward introduced Special Operations (Spec Ops) into Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019, co-op fans were ecstatic. This unique game mode allowed players to complete challenging operations that require patience and skill.

Fortunately, IW has continued this trend by including it in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But, as players can expect, Infinity Ward has made several changes that refine the gameplay elements of the game mode. So, players who enjoyed playing Spec Ops for the 2019 COD release or those interested in trying something new will want to discover everything this game mode offers for MW2.

What is Spec Ops?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Spec Ops

Spec Ops or Special Operations is a co-op game mode that places players in war-torn areas with specific tasks to complete. Some missions may require a player to eliminate a target, while others may require the player to steal enemy intel. But, these tasks may change over time, so players may need to change their gameplay style.

Up to two players can join a Spec Ops mission. Each player can choose one Kit (Medic, Assault, Recon, etc.) that has an assortment of Field Upgrades, Perks, and Killstreaks to use in a mission. Players should make sure they use kits that will benefit the team. Upon completing a Spec Ops mission, players will receive up to three stars, depending on how well the team did in the mission.

In addition to new Spec Ops missions, players will notice several new features in this game mode. For example, players can use the Backpack (which is heavily featured in the campaign), allowing them to switch their lethal and tactical equipment. Players will also be able to play a revamped version of "Spec Ops Survival," where they'll need to defend various areas from waves of enemies (similar to Zombies mode from previous COD games). Special Intel items will be scattered around each map, so players that want to learn more about the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 lore will want to find them all.

At launch, only three Kits will be available: Assault, Medic, and Recon. Here are some of the things featured in the Kits:

  • Assault Kit: Armor Box, a Mini-Juggernaut, and some Stims.
  • Medic Kit: Revive Pistol, Bomb Drone, and Claymores.
  • Recon Kit: Snapshot Pulse, Restock Perk, and Heartbeat Sensor.

Players can level up Kits by using them in missions or obtaining stars (up to level 10). Each level adds more tactical/lethal equipment or other useful Field Upgrades and Perks. Similar to the previous Spec Ops game mode, every mission rewards players with stars. The more stars players obtain, the more rewards (calling cards, emblems, and operator skins) they unlock. So, players that want to obtain all the operator skins, like the Burger Town skin, will want to complete all mission at max stars.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
