Nvidia has admitted that many instability issues experienced playing the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are caused by its most recent GPU driver. The issue was first reported by Beenox, the lead studio behind the development of Modern Warfare 2.

PC gamers took to social media, describing a series of strange crashes and instances where the game simply quit to desktop in the middle of a multiplayer battle or campaign level. For Steam players a lengthy download was often required before the game would load again, while many gamers tried ensuring game files weren't corrupted, even going as far as uninstalling and reinstalling the game. An earlier bug caused Modern Warfare 2 to crash when players joined a party, so additional instability adds insult to injury for PC players.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched to somewhat mixed reviews, with many reviewers claiming the game pales in comparison to its 2019 predecessor. As gamers began discussing reviews and the new game's format, issues about stability quickly arose. PC developer Beenox addressed this by suggesting players not update to Nvidia's 526.47 driver, the most recent update available, and to continue using the 522.25 drivers. Nvidia has now officially confirmed that there is a bug within the latest driver, and they're currently working on a hotfix to correct it. Nvidia also said that is why it hasn't promoted or recommended this latest Game Ready driver.

Some gamers claimed via social media that they updated to the new Nvidia drivers in an effort to fix the existing stability issues mentioned above. While updating GPU drivers is standard procedure in PC gaming, in this case it seemed to make the problem worse. This comes just after Modern Warfare 2 disabled the weapons tuning system to improve stability.

For now Nvidia hasn't provided a time-frame as to when a hotfix will become available. The current Game Ready driver, which is known to be broken, is still listed for download as of this writing, and gamers are encouraged to stick with older drivers, even if other game stability issues are being encountered. While gamers who have updated to the new driver can roll back to the previous driver, this is more difficult than updating, and something PC gamers may be slightly unfamiliar with if they're new to the territory. It's hard to say what is worse, the GPU driver issues, or a Modern Warfare 2 bug that sends gamers into an endless cutscene loop.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
