Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developers Infinity Ward have detailed the upgrades to the Gunsmith tool. The customization tool, now known as Gunsmith 2.0, allows users to design their guns in detail before heading off into one of the various multiplayer modes found within Modern Warfare 2.

Gunsmith has appeared in all games within the Call of Duty franchise since Black Ops III and is a feature where players add various attachments such as optics and ammo modifications to any weapon. With Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward has lifted the lid on what new features players can expect within the revamped mode ahead of the game’s release on October 28.

With the previous Call of Duty games, players are able to customize all weapons, changing the muzzle and stock of the gun or adding perks to suit loadouts to their play style. Gunsmith 2.0 improves on this somewhat by introducing a new Receiver Slot option within the menu. This allows modifications within the same "family" of weapons to be moved over to a new weapon once a player has unlocked the relevant upgrade. Unlike last year’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, which saw a lot of eye-watering weapon modifications compared to previous years, players won’t have to face a lengthy grind to unlock specific modifiers once a newer gun has been unlocked.

MW 2’s new streamlined process to Gunsmith 2.0 will undoubtedly be a welcome change for long-time COD fans as it means less time will be spent tinkering with the weapons, freeing up more time in the various multiplayer modes expected to appear in Modern Warfare 2. Along with the practical improvements, Infinity Ward also confirmed that all the modifications and attachments for each weapon family are designed to look the part, so no matter which extensions are used, the gun will not look out of place on the battlefield.

Activision is set to unleash more information about Modern Warfare 2 during their Call of Duty Next Event, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 15 at 10 AM PT, where it is expected the publisher will show an in-depth look at the gameplay from both single and multiplayer campaigns as well as sharing the first look at the new Call of Duty: Warzone 2 battle royale title.

A few days after the presentation, a series of Modern Warfare 2 beta tests will deploy with the first public test beginning on September 18 – September 20 for PlayStation players, before moving on to PC & Xbox gamers the following weekend.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
