Although the last Silent Hill game was released in 2012, the PS Vita exclusive Book of Memories, many would argue that the heydays of the series began and ended with the first four installments. With the 2001 sequel being one of the best psychological horror games of all time, it has left a mark on the fan base and a hole that needs to be filled. While a new game may not be happening any time soon, a small group of dedicated modders is doing the next best thing.

According to a recent report from DSO Gaming, a team of developers calling themselves Codeless Studio is working on a remake of the first Silent Hill game, but done in Unreal Engine 5. A short video uploaded to YouTube a couple of days ago shows some pre-alpha footage of the opening sequence of the game. In the clip, Harry is seen wandering the foggy streets of the titular town in search of his daughter, before all goes dark, and the footage ends on the close-up of a bloodied corpse chained up in the alleyway.

While the Silent Hill series has a rich lore, chock-full of disturbing characters and a twisted history, it's this opening sequence which is iconic in the genre, introducing the world to the haunted locale and its secrets. Sadly, the report goes on to say that this UE5 remake will not be made available to the public. This means fans won't get to play this modern take on a classic. Although no reason is given as to why, it's entirely possible that Codeless Studio simply doesn't want to find themselves in legal battles with Konami, so are opting to keep it as a visual demonstration rather than a playable one.

The footage itself is very impressive, especially for a very early build. It recaptures those creepy vibes from the original, but with a makeover that brings it into this era of gaming. It is a shame that people won't get to experience it outside of videos, however. With P.T. being removed from the PlayStation Store in 2015, effectively ending any chance of a new Silent Hill game from the minds of Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, the franchise is dead in the water.

In general, it does show that there are some talented people out there who will not let the Silent Hill name die entirely. With Unreal Engine 5 being one of the most popular game engines in this current climate, seeing a full remake of this beloved classic using this powerful tool would be a dream come true for many. Maybe a full release will come to the fore one day. But at least Slitterhead is on the horizon.
