Leave it to a living legend like Tom Cruise to take Paramount's next Mission: Impossible entry to an even higher level than before. According to editor Eddie Hamilton, Mission: Impossible 8 will surpass the stunts seen in previous films.
The actor, known for putting his body to the limits in his effort to entertain audiences, will outdo himself according to the editor for the final entries in the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise. In the words of the editor, what Cruise did will be seen as nothing less than “historic.”
Cruise is no stranger to doing spectacular stunts, and there’s a reason he’s one of the highest-paid, most engaging actors working today. He's been making action films in the Mission: Impossible franchise for the better part of 30 years, and when the last one debuts in theaters it will be 28 years since he made the first one under the helm of Brian DePalma. In an interview with ScreenRant, Eddie Hamilton talked about the latest entry from director Christopher McQuarrie. He said, "Again, collaborating with Tom [Cruise] and Chris McQuarrie every day on that sequence to keep evolving it and making it better and better and, I swear, some of the stuff he’s doing, I mean, it’s historic, man. I’m not exaggerating.”
“You’re going to watch it and you’re going to go, y’know, Tom’s done it again. He has done it again. And, it is amazing to have a ringside seat to that stuff, honestly," Hamilton said. The editor then compared what audiences would see to the insane flying in Top Gun: Maverick's canyon sequence. He said, "There’s going to be some moments in Mission 8 where you have that same kind of, 'I can’t believe I’m seeing this' experience. Two years to go and you’ll see it."
Hamilton's comments mean there is a lot for audiences to look forward to since just a few things that have been considered historic in the past have been the moon landing, the Red Sox winning the 2007 World Series, and Rick and Morty fans getting McDonald's to bring back Szechuan sauce. Now Tom Cruise's stunt work can be added to that list of great human achievements.
Cruise has already pulled off stunts that defy expectations on his lonesome, from climbing the Burj Khalifa, clinging to the side of a plane taking off, to piloting his own helicopter after rushing his training by doing double lessons for Fallout where he faced down Henry Cavill. The guy even trained himself to hold his breath for six-minute intervals for an underwater vault break-in in Rogue Nation.
The bottom line is, if what Cruise is doing for the latest Mission: Impossible entry is somehow even more spectacular than all of that and what he pulled off in Maverick, fans of the series are in a fantastic time at the cinemas.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is scheduled to release in theaters on July 14, 2023.
