Next week, the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is coming to the digital version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition and the best part is that it is absolutely free.

On May 17, those Minecraft fans who are owners of the digital version of the Minecraft: Wii U Edition will receive the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack as a free update, which includes themed skins, textures, music, and an entire pre-made Super Mario world ready to explore. For anyone not sure what to do with these new resources, Nintendo has released a trailer that shows off just some of the possibilities.

Players can recreate Super Mario Sunshine’s Delfino Plaza, erect towering statues of their favorite characters, or even trade Minecraft inhabitants with familiar creatures from the Super Mario series. Those who want to mix and match might find that Dry Bones is the perfect companion to those pesky skeletons.

The more players explore, the more they will find that these two worlds are a natural fit. After all, Minecraft features vast underground areas to explore, just like Super Mario. Of course, players who want to delve into the deep places of the world might forgo the digging or explosions and opt to travel by pipe, which is presumably safer than TNT.

Given what is being shown, it is a wonder that this collaboration took so long to take place. Wii U owners can attest that Nintendo was a tad late the party, having released a version for their console just last December. In fact, before the Wii U edition's official announcement, many believed that it wouldn’t come to the console at all. Because of this, the Super Mario update doubles as an incentive to buy this particular version, and a reward those who were patient enough to wait for it.

Now that Mario has officially come to the world of Minecraft, perhaps it is time to flip that. Last year, one of our own writers pitched the idea to see Minecraft's Steve brought into Super Smash Bros. as a fighter. It is easy to see how that could fit together well, seeing as all Steve does is build things, blow them up, or fight. Even Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson thinks it would be "neat."

Anyone with the incredible patience to wait for the retail version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition can pick it when it is released next month. It is priced the same as the digital version, at $29.99, and will include the Super Mario Mash-Up pack.

The digital version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition is out now, while the physical iteration is set to release on June 17, 2016 for, of course, Wii U.
