Minecraft and the pickaxe go together like bread and butter, it's practically impossible to separate the two concepts. One of the first things that players will do after gathering some wood is make a pickaxe, and it signifies the moment where their journey truly starts. Over time, the concept of the "ultimate pickaxe" has changed, with each new update introducing powerful materials or enchantments that up the ante. Part one of the Caves and Cliffs update just dropped, and although it added some new items and crafting materials, the ultimate pickaxe remains the same. This will likely be the case once the second part comes as well.

The pickaxe is required to mine many different types of ore and rock in Minecraft, and as the name would suggest, this is a very important facet of the game. An iron pickaxe will do the trick for almost everything outside of obsidian and ancient debris, but there are plenty of options that last longer, mine faster, and look cooler that players can use.

The ultimate pickaxe is essentially the one that mines the fastest, has the highest durability, and has all the possible enchantments it can have. In the current state of the game, this would be Minecraft's relatively new Netherite Pickaxe with Efficiency 5, Unbreaking 3, Fortune 3, and Mending 1 on it. Getting one of these is a huge process though, and players wanting to try it for themselves will need to be patient and dedicated. Here's a step by step list of how to get one.

Minecraft how to make ultimate pickaxe

The first thing players are going to need to do is get a Netherite Pickaxe. There are several steps to complete this part of the process as well:

  • Step 1: Find three diamonds and forge a diamond pick.
  • Step 2: Find four Ancient Debris, smelt it into Netherite Scraps, and craft it together with four gold ingots to forge a Netherite Ingot.
  • Step 3: Craft a Smithing Table and upgrade the diamond pick into a Netherite Pickaxe.

With the Netherite Pickaxe in hand, players now need to work on the enchantments. In order to have the best chance at success, players will need a fully powered enchanting table.

While this may seem simple on paper, players will ultimately end up needing at least 90 wooden planks, 50 leather, and 150 paper, 33 iron, four obsidian, five diamonds, four Ancient Debris, four gold ingots, a bunch of Lapis Lazuli, and a whole lot of experience and luck. Needless to say, this process will take a long time (with the diamonds and Ancient Debris for Netherite Ingots being the hardest to find), but the end result is the fastest pickaxe in the game with the highest durability, the greatest item yield from mining, and the ability to repair itself as the player earns experience.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
