Many consider the number 13 to be unlucky. It's a notion that has been reinforced for some players by Final Fantasy XIII's ill reception, despite its underrated protagonist Lightning. After the events of January 13, 2021, Twitch streamer Nathan may subscribe to this same belief.

Nathan is a regular streamer on Twitch who mostly streams Minecraft. Over the course of two years, Nathan built up a respectable following streaming Minecraft that, while not equaling any of the titans of Twitch, is still a powerful thing to accomplish. Yesterday, on January 13, 2021, almost all of Nathan's Twitch followers vanished in the course of a single night.

It should come as no surprise that Minecraft is a popular game to stream, since a streamer can take it in any direction. Dedication to a single project, exploration, or just fun activities for when a streamer or their chat is bored. All of these helped Nathan get to around 21,000 followers throughout the last two years. Then, one morning, Nathan awoke to discover that number had dropped to seven. How or why this happened is still unknown, but while losing some followers at once is conceivable, losing so many by their own choice all at once for no discernable reason is significantly less likely.

Twitch streamers will often run into unexpected problems with the platform, and sad to say, those problems can take many forms. Follower loss like Nathan has been known to occur, although usually not in such great numbers. There are also more human problems, like abuse from viewers for various reasons. Fortunately this was not the case for Nathan, as viewers rallied together to once more raise his follower count, bringing it up to 10,000 in record time. Even fellow streamer Tubbo got in on the act, helping Nathan as he had done before with a subs gift.

The reason for this sudden follower loss is still unknown, but hopefully Twitch Support is looking into it. This is one of the more extreme manifestations of Twitch's technical problems, but certainly not the only one. Shroud, one of the biggest streamers on the platform, was recently prevented from sending his followers to another stream in a raid due to his (Shroud's) viewer base being too large. It's definitely a shame, since Nathan could probably use an enormous raid right about now.

Hopefully, Nathan's Follower count grows and he manages to get back on his feet. Minecraft still offers fantastic possibilities for streaming, so odds are he won't be short on content.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X
