Telltale reveals Minecraft: Story Mode is concluding its first season with Ep. 5 on March 29, with the developer also announcing an additional 3 episodes to be released in 2016.
Minecraft: Story Mode’s thrilling conclusion… was in Episode 4. But Telltale Games isn’t happy leaving things as is. Episode 5 is near completion, with a launch date of March 29 now scheduled for the not-quite-a-conclusion to arrive. The Wither Storm finale may already have occurred, but the adventure is only just beginning – which is apparently why a mere five episodes just won’t do.
Telltale also announced today that Minecraft: Story Mode will feature three additional episodes, which will be released in 2016. Episodes 6, 7, and 8 will continue the adventures of the New Order of the Stone as they travel to unfamiliar biomes and do good. Technically, these episodes are add-on content akin to DLC. They are not included with the full first season, but owning at least the first episode will be required to download any episodes from the post-season. Telltale is otherwise remaining quiet on the events in these episodes, but perhaps Episode 5 will give some hints as to where Jesse and crew end up next.
As for Episode 5 in particular, the Wither Storm conclusion will not see our heroes left sitting around. Aiden is back and up to no good as the New Order of the Stone travels to the world of Sky City, where trouble is brewing. Without giving away too much, let’s just say that the fate of our heroes is somewhat up in the air.
There should absolutely be some curiosity regarding this decision by Telltale Games. While the developer has released “mid-season” episodes before, like with The Walking Dead: 400 Days, those served as transitional content for future seasons. Three episodes, however, is a bit odd – especially when they are being labeled as bonus, or add-on, content for Season 1 of Minecraft: Story Mode.
Although this may suggest that plans for a plans for a second season may not have panned out, this seems unlikely. While Minecraft: Story Mode may not be the critical darling that The Walking Dead is, no one can question the selling power of the franchise. These three episodes seem to be more of a filler season while Telltale is able to schedule full development of the next season. If Minecraft: Story Mode wasn’t performing well, then Telltale would not be making more episodes at all.
If you look at Telltale’s schedule for 2016, it makes quite a bit more sense. Not only is Telltale preparing to launch its Batman series, but it’s also built Batman on a partially rebuilt engine. Expect all of Telltale’s might to be behind this Batman series, meaning Minecraft and The Walking Dead: Michonne will have to be spread around it. This three-episode grace period for Minecraft: Story Mode would perhaps allow Season 2 to launch late 2016 or early 2017, built on the upgraded engine. That is, if Telltale isn’t too busy with its Marvel game.
Minecraft: Story Mode’s Episode 5: Order Up will be available starting March 29 for PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, iOS and Android devices. Expect news on episodes 6, 7, and 8 in the months to come.
