Mojang Studios' Minecraft is a creative sandbox that has facilitated many impressive building projects in the past, some of which reference other facets of popular culture. For example, one player recently recreated Stranger Things' Starcourt Mall in Minecraft. Sometimes the developers release new content that can enhance these projects, such as a brand-new DLC set based on the Star Wars universe.
Minecraft's Star Wars DLC mash-up released today, offering content based on the Original Trilogy films and The Mandalorian, a Disney+ series currently airing its second season. It includes a skin pack, a full texture set, mob and item reskins, new UI elements, and a licensed soundtrack according to the announcement post on Minecraft's website. All together, the DLC costs 1,340 Minecoins through the game's marketplace.
Also included in this purchase is a special map showcasing builds based off the four included Star Wars properties "across 12 different planet dioramas." Based on the one-minute teaser video and screenshots included on the Minecraft Marketplace, these include Hoth, Tatooine, the Death Star, and Arvala-7 from The Mandalorian - complete with Baby Yoda (The Child) in its floating pod.
Thanks to The Mandalorian as well as the launch of EA's Star Wars: Squadrons earlier this year, the galaxy far, far away has been incorporated into a number of different video games beyond Minecraft. The Sims 4 released Star Wars: Journey to Batuu, a DLC pack based on the world of Disney's Star Wars land in its Anaheim theme park, while Squadrons has landed series iconography in games like Fortnite (which historically has a lot of crossover with other Disney-owned properties like Marvel Comics).
Star Wars is not the only major pop culture icon that Minecraft has crossed over with in 2020. This August, a Minecraft and Jurassic Park mash-up DLC released, while previous crossovers with video game properties have included Pac-Man, Fallout, and Super Mario.
As excited as some fans will undoubtedly be to have Star Wars-themed content in Minecraft, the sandbox game is also gearing up to release more of its own original content. The Caves & Cliffs update releasing next year promises to revamp cave and mountain generation so players will have more unique environments to explore, on top of adding new mobs like Axolotl and the Warden. Minecraft developers have also discussed future plans and interests, with raising Minecraft's world height limit being one possible future project.
