Minecraft has not seen the addition of a new vehicle for transportation since 2010, which is when boats and mine carts were added. This is likely due to the fact hat Mojang chose to expand on new modes of transportation later on, such as horses and elytras. However, sneak peeks into 1.20 have revealed that rafts are making their way into the game.

Minecraft vehicles have always occupied a strange place in the game. When boats were first added, they were difficult to use and broke easily. Mine carts were considered an innovation, but powered rails would not be added until years later. By the time they had their issues amended, more useful modes of transportation were available. With the addition of a new vehicle, Minecraft could see the possible innovation and inclusion of new, more elaborate, crafted vehicles.

What Future Minecraft Vehicles Could Bring

Along with various other uses for bamboo, Minecraft 1.20 will let players craft rafts with bamboo. Considering how the material differs in real life compared to normal wood, the raft could have bonuses that set it apart from normal boats. It also should not be forgotten that the 1.20 update will bring camels as well. Unlike horses, enemies such as zombies will not be able to damage the player when they're riding a camel, since they're so tall. Mojang could be focusing on diversifying methods of transportation to give them each a use.

Transportation methods in Minecraft have long had issues, even after the major ones were fixed. Ever since the addition of the elytra, every other transportation method is arguably a waste of time due to the fact that none could compete with how fast and exciting to use the elytra from the End was. With how Mojang is approaching the camel and possibly the raft, the game could see the future addition of more elaborate vehicles with their own niche uses.

One of the biggest ways that new transportation methods could affect the game is by breathing new life into older ones. Mine carts could see a boost to their speed in exchange for amount of materials it costs to create tracks across long distances. There could also be a system of linking mine carts together to create a sort of train-like vehicle, able to transport items and players without the issues multiple mine carts would normally bring to a track. Another more elaborate addition to existing systems could be the inclusion of larger boats, capable of transporting more than two players. Not only would this serve a functional use, but would allow more creative Minecraft players to build impressive functional docks.

However, there is a possibility that this trend could amount to something less impressive. While details are sparse on its functionality, rafts could just serve as re-skinned boats, making them not any more useful than the average boat. If anything, recent additions may lead to the elaboration of animal transportation. The addition of camels to Minecraft and their specialized use is a sign of this. If this is the case, transportation vehicles may see a few more years of neglect before being properly addressed.

Regardless of future updates, there is at least some comfort in knowing there will be more ways to traverse the world than players currently have. Despite years of features, boats and mine carts still have their uses, like for creating ice tracks to race Minecraft boats across. It would still be refreshing to see these decade-old additions receive some love in the form of a revamp or elaboration of their current uses.

Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
