Minecraft's newest update adds a few new features and fixes several bugs, but it also came side by side with a snapshot of version 1.18. Expected to release by the end of the year, this is the second part of the Caves and Cliffs update and will drastically overhaul how the game generates not just the titular caves and cliffs, but the entire world around the player. The snapshot is an optional update players can use to get a glimpse of what 1.18 might be like, although it is still experimental and may not be completely bug free. One player using this snapshot happened across an incredibly massive cave system exposed to the sky.

It's important to realize that this snapshot doesn't completely represent the finished product. Locales such as this one probably won't make it into the official 1.18 update, and if they do it will likely be buried underground for players to stumble across. For those wanting to try the Minecraft snapshot for themselves, it might be best to do so on a new world.

This discovery was made by Redditor NajtrWasTaken, who found the cave system while playing on creative mode. Flying through the cave, it's possible to see several of the new biomes coming in Minecraft version 1.18 on display all at once, with pillars of stone being juxtaposed right next to lush caves biomes. From the same spot, the player is able to see a sprawling lava lake, lush green vines, and seemingly endless waterfalls. It's truly an impressive site to behold.

This world generation was on the Java edition of Minecraft, and NajtrWasTaken provides the seed (2860142694335339622) and the coordinates (84 71 -3063) for players wanting to find this themselves. While the snapshot has resulted in plenty of awesome cave systems like this being found, it has also interacted very strangely with the generation of overworld biomes. Players have reported finding desert temples in the middle of plains and deserts spawning underground inside caves. These types of things will be fixed before the final release of Minecraft 1.18. It's likely that cave systems such as the one above will still generate, although it may still be rare or harder to find.

As strange and whacky as this Minecraft snapshot is, it has given fans a peek at what they can expect from the upcoming update. Fans seem beyond excited, as the prospect of exploring some of these new caves and going deeper than ever before will certainly make for some fun adventuring about.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
