An intrepid Minecraft player has assembled a historically accurate and visually stunning recreation of one of the WW2-era battleships that served in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Storm. This isn’t the first time players have drawn from history for inspiration in Mojang Studios’ sandbox title, as a jaw-dropping recreation in Minecraft of the Battle of Vicksburg is now being used to teach people about the Civil War.
Since first launching on PC as an obscure indie title in 2011, Minecraft has grown to become the best-selling game of all time and captured the hearts of gamers worldwide. With versions of Minecraft available on platforms ranging from mobile phones to consoles, the game lets players build whatever they want on nearly whatever device they want. The game’s simple yet versatile block-based building system has given players the ability to assemble everything from functional computers to a full-scale replica of Las Vegas in Minecraft.
In a post on r/Minecraft, Reddit user Speelicious shared some screenshots of a nearly photorealistic recreation of an Iowa-class battleship that they put together in Minecraft. From the wake in the water trailing the vessel to the ship’s 9 16-inch guns firing an explosive volley, the attention to detail on the Minecraft creation is staggering. Wanting to make sure Minecraft fans could explore the historical recreation for themselves, Speelicious noted in a reply that it was available for anyone to download. Although the battleship was made without the use of additional mods, players who want the same visual experience as the screenshots will have to download the shader pack Speelicious used.
Responses to pictures of the stunning Minecraft battleship were overwhelmingly positive, with some fans posting photos of real Iowa-class ships to highlight how accurate the recreation was. Another poster, fooled by the impressive visuals of the Minecraft battleship, stated that they thought it was an actual photo in the post preview until they took a closer look.
