Minecraft players are in for a whole new experience with the Nether Update which released today, but one of the most innovative additions made are the Piglins. Fans are no doubt familiar with the zombified Piglins which roamed the Nether previously, but now they get to meet, and interact with, the real deal.

Piglins are a new mob which were just added to the Nether with Minecraft's Nether Update, and they are a very unique mob. Unlike Zombie Piglins, these mobs are hostile, and must be won over by wearing gold armor. Despite this, if the player is prepared, the Piglin is capable of bartering with the player.

This is fundamentally a similar design as Villager Trading, but works completely differently. Rather than having a menu and set items with emerald costs, Piglins simply take gold ingots and return a random item instead. Players don't have much control over what they get, but there is a loot table showing what's available.

Piglin Minecraft

In order to trade with a Piglin, the player needs to either throw a gold ingot on the ground near one or use a gold ingot on one. The Piglin will take the gold, inspect it for about six to eight seconds, and then drop items for the player. It's worth noting that these values come from development versions, and may have changed with the actual release of the game. The following list contains the most common items obtainable, which have about a 9.46% drop rate from trades.

  • 1 - 5 Fire Charge
  • 8 - 16 Gravel
  • 4 - 10 Leather
  • 4 - 16 Nether Bricks
  • 1 Obsidian
  • 1 - 3 Crying Obsidian
  • 4 - 16 Soul Sand

These items have about a 4.73% chance to drop from trades:

  • 8 - 16 Nether Quartz
  • 5 - 12 Glowstone Dust
  • 2 - 6 Magma Cream
  • 4 - 8 Ender Pearls
  • 8 - 24 String

This group of items drops about 2.36% of the time

These are the rarest items (drop rate listed below)

  • 1 Iron Boots with Soul Speed enchantment ~1.89%
  • 1 Enchanted Book with Soul Speed enchantment ~1.18%

Within this list there are some obviously great drops and some pretty abysmal one. It would be unfortunate to end up trading a gold ingot for 8 string or 16 gravel, but the chance at receiving better rewards outweighs that risk. Some of the more notable trades include 4 - 8 Ender Pearls, the potions of fire resistance, and the soul speed enchantments. These mobs are the first type that can be both traded with and hostile, so it sets an interesting precedent.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
