Mushroom islands or mushroom fields are a unique biome in Minecraft where gigantic mushrooms can be found growing. They're fairly rare in the game, and are typically found in the form of isolated islands in the middle of the ocean, far away from the player's spawn, though there are exceptions to these rules.

The mushroom field biome also spawns the famous red cows with mushrooms on their backs called mooshrooms. Another brown variant of them is even rarer to find in the wild. Mooshrooms are an interesting mob with quite a bit of utility, and the biome itself is full of cool features, which is why players should give survival gameplay a shot on it. Here are a few tips on how to thrive in this strange biome in Minecraft.

6 Fish For Rare Items

Fishing will be one of the key activities players will need to engage in, in order to thrive on any island in general. Islands have limited resources due to limited landmass, which is why every little item and piece of loot is important. Fishing allows players to access food, a few useful junk items like glass bottles, bones, sticks, and string, as well as fish for enchanted books.

Bones and string, especially, will be important for players, since mushroom field biomes don't naturally spawn mobs, even at night time. This means that getting a good fishing rod early, either by crafting one with limited resources or finding one in a nearby ocean ruin treasure chest, is key for survival.

5 Sources Of Food On Mushroom Fields

Luckily, food won't be an issue for players stuck on a mushroom field island. Mooshrooms are the only mob that spawns here, and they're almost better than regular cows. Mooshrooms can be bred normally like regular cows using wheat, and they can also be milked using a wooden bowl to produce one of the best foods in Minecraft: mushroom stew.

Moreover, Mooshrooms will drop regular raw steak when killed, along with leather, so players will be able to get tons of food early on, as well as save up some leather for their enchantment table set up. Other than Mooshrooms, players can also harvest all the giant mushrooms and small mushrooms planted on the island to craft mushroom stew on their own by using one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, and one wooden bowl.

4 Farming For Crops Remains Unchanged

There aren't any limitations to crop farming on mushroom fields, despite the ground having a strange appearance. Mycelium can be hoed into farmland just like normal dirt, so growing wheat, potatoes, carrots, and such shouldn't be too hard. The issue is actually getting wheat seeds in the first place.

Mushrooms are also obviously easy to grow on mycelium. In fact, thanks to this unique soil, mushrooms won't need to be grown in low light for them to spread and thrive. Players can have a full-blown mushroom farm set up much earlier than a wheat farm.

3 Getting Wood On A Mushroom Island

Wood will be the main issue players will have. While sticks can be fished out, players will first actually need a fishing rod to start fishing. Some emergency sources of wood include any nearby shipwrecks in the water that are within swimming distance and not too deep and caves that might lead to abandoned mineshafts, a fairly common structure that spawns underground.

Extremely lucky players might even come across an azalea tree on a mushroom island, which can be harvested for food and replanted. This also marks the location of a lush cave biome directly underneath the tree's location, if the player follows its roots.

Once the player has earned basic tools and survived for a few days, they might be visited by the wandering trader. He'll usually sell saplings for 5 emeralds, and it's possible for players to get their hands on emeralds if they have been opening shipwreck loot chests or buried treasure chests. Make sure to save any early emeralds for saplings.

2 Hostile Mob Spawning Rules

Mushroom fields don't spawn hostile mobs, even at night time and even underground in any caves that are part of the mushroom field biome, so typically located underneath it. However, there are two exceptions to this rule.

If there's a mob spawner, such as a dungeon spawner or cave spider spawner, it's still possible for mobs to spawn even in mushroom fields. Moreover, following the introduction of underground cave biomes, even if a cave biome like a lush cave or dripstone cave, or deep dark biome is located directly underneath a mushroom field biome, they override that biome and can spawn mobs, since they are their own underground biome.

1 Enter The Nether For Trading And Items

Minecraft Nether Update Piglins

Since villages don't spawn in mushroom fields, players are stuck trading with the wandering trader or the Nether-dwelling Piglins. Setting up a Nether portal early can actually be incredibly useful since the Nether has many resources these days thanks to its various biomes. A crimson forest biome or warped forest biome is perfect for players, as it allows them to access tons of wood, Ender pearls through Endermen, and more food in the form of Hoglins.

Piglins are fantastic for bartering with. In exchange for gold ingots, they can provide the player with a reliable source of string, obsidian, silver nuggets, leather, and Ender pearls. Make sure to visit them regularly.

Minecraft is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and many other devices.
