With all of the different tables found in the game, players exploring the vast cubic world of Minecraft can understandably get a bit mixed up at times. Smithing Tables are both a variation of the Anvil block as well as a Job Site Block for unemployed Villagers that can let them become Toolsmiths.

Smithing Tables are very easy to make and players can craft, or find them, remarkably early in a playthrough, though their most important function of upgrading armor won't become relevant for quite a while, as that requires Diamonds and Netherite Ingots. However, it can be prudent to find one sooner rather than later as they, and the Toolsmiths they create, can be helpful in gathering Diamond tools.

Smithing Table Crafting Components & Recipes

The components needed to craft a Smithing Table are 2 Iron Ingots and 4 Wooden Planks made from any kind of wood. The shape of the recipe is also pretty straightforward in that it is in a 2 x 3 pattern with the 2 Iron Ingots in the top row and the 4 Wooden Planks in the 4 open slots below them. While a simple recipe, players will still need to use a Crafting Table to make one, as the player's 2 x 2 inventory crafting section is not large enough to accommodate all of the components.

Where Smithing Tables Can Spawn

Alternatively, players can get lucky and find a fully functioning Smithing Table in any normal Village. It is even possible that there will already be some Toolsmiths living there if they've had a chance to interact with this Job Site Block.

Using A Smithing Table To Upgrade Armor & Tools

Those who have gathered and possibly enchanted a solid set of Diamond armor and tools can further upgrade their gear with a Smithing Table. To do so, one will need to interact with a Smithing Table, which will bring up a menu that looks very similar to that of the Anvil.

Next, players will need to place their desired tool or piece of armor into the leftmost slot and 1 Netherite Ingot in the slot next to it. The far-right slot should then be filled by a Netherite version of the diamond tool or piece of armor put into the far-left slot.

It is worth noting that items upgraded in this way at a Smithing Table keep their enchantments and their level of remaining durability, and the process of upgrading them requires no Experience.

Using A Smithing Table To Create & Trade With Toolsmiths

Like with all Job Site Blocks, all the player needs to do to employ a Villager is place a Smithing Table near an unemployed Villager and wait until they interact with it to give rise to a new Toolsmith.

If one possesses an overabundance of Emeralds, they can do some trading to obtain otherwise difficult-to-find goods. When trading with a Toolsmith, players can buy tools of various kinds; even Diamond and enchanted ones if a Toolsmith is at a high enough level.
