The second part of the Minecraft Cliffs & Caves update was released last month, adding a whole chunk of new content to Mojang's legendary sandbox title. Cliffs & Caves is all about Minecraft's mountainous regions, adding new biomes and cave generation systems. The update also introduced the Goat, a new Neutral Mob that spawns only in mountainous regions.

Although the Goat may look like Minecraft's Sheep Mob, it's actually quite a different animal. Goats can't be sheared, but can be milked with the use of a bucket. Apart from Milk, the only other resource that players can get from Goats are their Horns, but these aren't as easy to collect.

How to Get Goat Horns in Minecraft

Minecraft Goat on a jagged peak

The Goat Mob in Minecraft may technically be Neutral, but that doesn't make it Passive. Every 30 to 300 seconds, a Goat that has seen another Mob or player standing still may choose to ram it. To perform their ram attack, Goats need at least 4 empty spaces between them and their target, but can choose to ram from up to 16 spaces away. Once the Goat has picked a target, it'll let out a different bleat and begin a charging animation that will deal damage and knockback if it hits.

If instead of hitting its intended target, the Goat instead collides with a solid block, it will drop up to 2 Horns. This is currently the only way to acquire the Goat Horn rare item in Minecraft, so players will need to master dodging or quickly placing blocks in order to collect more than a few. The rare Goat variant known as the Screaming Goat, which makes different noises, will ram much more frequently, and so is a great find for players looking to farm Horns.

What Goat Horns Are Used For in Minecraft

version 1 18 update best changes

There are currently no recipes in Minecraft's crafting system that require Goat Horns, either in items or Potions. Although this means that they have no practical use, it doesn't mean that they're completely worthless. Players can play a Goat Horn by holding down the use key while holding one, producing a Horn noise that is identical to the one that is heard during raids.

In addition, the Goat Horn can make a fine decorative item, particularly in the kind of mountain home that Minecraft's Cliffs & Caves update is designed for. To use the Goat Horn decoratively, all players need to do is place it in an Item Frame. It's expected that new recipes will be added for the Horn in future updates, so eager players may want to start gathering their Screaming herds in preparation.

Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
