The Developer for Minecraft recently decided to cut ties with older VR device integration for the game.
VR Minecraft allowed for a variety of new modes to ease players into the original method of play, such as the virtual living room function. However, Mojang announced earlier this week that it is going to terminate support for specific older devices and platforms in October of this year.
The affected systems include the Gear VR, Windows 10, WP, and Android devices with less than 768MB of RAM. Older devices that have video cards that only support 10.1 DirectX or below will also stop receiving continued support. On the plus side, Minecraft will remain on the Oculus Rift, and there are no foreseeable plans to discontinue updates on that system.
According to the Minecraft developers, the termination of the older system prevents current Gear VR and Windows 10 mobile players from having to use Realms from unsupported devices. Fans who already added the Realms subscription will still have access to their world until they decide to move their subscription to a different device. Sadly, multiplayer mode will only be possible with devices running on the same version of the software.
Fans will still be able to play Minecraft on the unsupported devices after the termination in October, but it will only be available in single-player mode. Players can also continue to build on their world and make purchases with Minecoins. In addition, gamers will still have access to their marketplace purchases and Realm subscription from other platforms. And if players still aren't satisfied with this, they have the option to ask to refund their Minecraft Realms subscription after the October cancellation date.
Thanks to the VR implementation to Minecraft last year, veteran players were able to experience the game from an entirely new perspective. Players were ready to battle creeps face-first on a variety of different consoles such as Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. It is a shame to see the function go away for older systems, but at least gamers will be able to move their worlds onto a newer device. If players wish to continue their adventure, all they need to do is just upload the world to a Realm and then download the backup onto a new device.
Minecraft is available for PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and various legacy devices.
