In Minecraft, chests and barrels are the main way for players to store their items but combining obsidian and an eye of ender opens up another option: the ender chest. This block has a unique storage system that is shared across all dimensions in the game.

Unfortunately, ender chests require players to progress farther down the Minecraft technology line than most other storage devices in the game. The recipe calls for 8 obsidian blocks and an eye of ender, both of which are far from early game items. Players just need a crafting table after getting these supplies to create an ender chest.

Making an Ender Chest

Combining water and lava source blocks results in obsidian. A diamond or netherite pickaxe is the key to gathering these blocks, as all other tools won't drop an obsidian block. Players will need to gather 8 of these blocks to craft just one ender chest. And the other ingredient, the eye of ender, asks players to get an ender pearl and blaze powder.

Ender men are the best source of ender pearls for players. These mobs have a base chance of 50 percent for dropping one ender pearl when killed. The only other ways players can acquire ender pearls are from expert-level cleric villagers in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft and bartered for from Piglins and found in altar chests in strongholds. Blaze powder can only be crafted from blaze rods which are dropped by Blazes in the Nether dimension.

Ender chests, much like regular chests in Minecraft, contain 27 slots for storage and can't open when a solid block is placed above them. The ender chest's ability to retain items when destroyed, its interconnected nature, and the fact that these chests can't interact with hoppers, droppers, or comparators is where these two differ, however.

All ender chests in a player's world share those 27 slots and contain a unique to each player. This means that every player in a Minecraft world sees a different inventory in the same ender chest. And this inventory can also be accessed across in-game dimensions meaning that these can be placed and operated across the Nether, the End, and the Overworld. These chests are especially useful for those seeking to expand their inventory before they get shulker boxes.

Creating an ender chest gives players the option to place high-value items inside and transport them to any location. Once it is placed, players will have access to whatever items were placed within. It is because of this that ender chests have become useful for the battle against the ender dragon.

This quintessential battle in Minecraft can be approached in many ways, but having an additional 27 stacks of items can only help. Having two ender chests gives players the option to respawn, refill one chest at a player's base, and then re-enter the battle with replacement supplies in the chest placed at the battleground.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
