During Xbox's E3 Press Conference, Minecraft: Dungeons, the cooperative RPG title set in the Minecraft universe, released its first gameplay trailer today. The new trailer showed a number of gameplay mechanics, what type of environments players will jump into, as well as a release window for the game.
While it was originally announced back in Fall 2018, Minecraft: Dungeons looks to offer a similar gameplay style along the likes of Diablo with its isometric-RPG style. At the time however, the game was slated to launch in 2019, but has since been pushed back for a Spring 2020 release. Some of the environments players will explore include forests, dungeons, and temples, and is confirmed to offer both online and local 4-player co-op.
Given the game's "dungeon crawler" reference in its original announcement, its likely the players will be spending much of their time together taking down waves of enemies and acquiring loot to manage. Given building and inventory management are two of the most prominent features in traditional Minecraft, this shouldn't come as a surprise to many.
It's no secret developer Mojang has looked at new ways to use the Minecraft IP to influence spin-off projects. While Minecraft: Dungeons looks to bring a whole new gameplay experience, the developer has also taken a narrative approach in the past, collaborating with Telltale Games to release two seasons of Minecraft: Story Mode to various consoles, however those games will be delisted across various digital stores later this month following Telltale's closure this past Fall.
Given the millions of copies Minecraft has sold since the game first launched in 2009, there's never a bad time for the team behind the massive crafting simulator to try and find new ways to give fans a new experience. Even though the game will be published by Microsoft, Minecraft: Dungeons is confirmed to be coming to other systems such as PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
New details for Minecraft: Dungeons was just one of the many announcements to come from Xbox's E3 Conference. The roughly 90-minute show offered new information on console specs for Project Scarlett, as well as release dates and windows for Gears 5 and Halo Infinite, respectively. Arguably the biggest reveal however came from developer CD Projekt RED's upcoming title Cyberpunk 2077, which not only announced its released date, but confirmed actor Keanu Reeves would be starring in the massive open-world game.
Minecraft: Dungeons will launch in Spring 2020 on various platforms.
