Minecraft DLC will still be released on PS4, despite the console not supporting the Better Together update. The Better Together update introduces cross-platform play to the PC, mobile, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game, but Sony "refused" to be part of it.

In a blog post published earlier this week by Minecraft developer Mojang, it confirmed that it would not be "twiddling [its] thumbs" in preparation of the Better Together update and that it has much more content in the works. The Console Edition of the game "will still be getting updated with new features, and those platforms which won’t support the Better Together Update will continue getting updates even after it lands."

Here are some of the new pieces of content included in the latest console update: seven new Achievements/Trophies, a new user interface engine that will "boost" performance, a Woodland Mansion, parrots, llamas, treasure maps, "bouncy" beds, and more. These new features and the confirmation from Mojang will hopefully extinguish concerns that the PS4 version of the game would not be getting any more new content due to Sony's refusal to play ball.

With that said, Mojang's blog post doesn't confirm that the PS4 version of the game will get those post-Better Together updates at the same time as other platforms. Making PS4 players wait a little bit longer would upset fans, but would also put pressure on Sony to change its mind on cross-play support. Reportedly, Sony's reason for not supporting the feature is due the requirement of an Xbox Live log-in system. The company's disapproval is understandable, but that doesn't make it any better for fans who are missing out on playing with their non-PS4 owning buddies.

At this stage, it's unclear whether Sony is listening to fan concerns and if it has any plans to reconsider its stance. Minecraft is not the only PS4 game that is missing out on cross-play because of Sony decision making, as Rocket League cross-play is all stitched up with red tape as well. In Rocket League's case, everything is ready to go, but the only hurdle is Sony. As of this week, the company still isn't interested in the feature. But if the company does decide to budge at some point, hopefully it will open the floodgates for Minecraft, Rocket League, and many other games in future to finally make cross-play available to PS4 players.

Minecraft is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and can also be played on Android and iOS devices.
