Minecraft is widely-recognized as one of the most influential games of all time. The 2011 indie title has achieved massive popularity, and still attracts vast numbers of players a full decade after its release. This is partly due to the amount of updates that Minecraft has received, building and expanding the procedurally driven world with new items and encounters.
One tool block that wasn't added until late in Minecraft's life is the Smithing Table, which arrived in the 1.14 update back in 2019. Smithing Tables are just one of a multitude of workshop-style blocks that players can interact with to expand their crafting options. Here's how to put one together on Minecraft's Crafting Table.
Crafting A Smithing Table in Minecraft
Despite being a late-game block, the Smithing Table is actually surprisingly easy to craft. All players need to make one is:
- 2 x Iron Ingots
- 4 x Wood Planks (Any)
To make Iron Ingots, players need to smelt Iron Ore in a fueled Furnace. Players can find Iron Ore in Minecraft by exploring underground, often in veins of 3-13 blocks at a time. Planks can be converted from Logs in any crafting menu, with a single Log making 4 Planks.
Once they've got the ingredients, players will need to put them together in their Crafting Table in Minecraft. Putting together a Smithing Table is as simple as arranging the 4 Planks in a square in the lower half of the table, and putting the 2 Iron Ingots on top.
Using A Smithing Table in Minecraft
The Smithing Table may not require complicated materials, but players are unlikely to need one until very late in their Minecraft campaign. This is because the Smithing Table's primary use is upgrading Diamond armor, tools, and weapons into Netherite. Netherite gear is the best in Minecraft, and offers improved protection and damage over Diamond. However, acquiring Netherite Ingots to upgrade Diamond gear can be really tricky.
There are no prizes for guessing that Netherite can only be acquired in the Nether, Minecraft's hellish alternate dimension. It takes 4 Netherite Scraps and 4 Gold Ingots to craft a single Netherite Ingot. Alternatively, players can loot a Netherite Ingot from treasure chests within Bastion Remnants. These are randomly-generated castle ruins that can only be found in the Nether. Although it's tricky, upgrading Diamond gear at a Smithing Table doesn't cost Experience Points and allows the item to keep all compatible enchantments.
