Minecraft is filled with recognizable tools and items whose original designs have become iconic. Despite this, the game's community continues to come up with interesting alternative looks for each and every item in Minecraft. One of the latest player redesigns deals with the in-game clock, and it completely flips the original look on its head.
Players taking on any traditional mode in Minecraft experience a day and night cycle. The latter being much more of a challenge, it is important for players to know what time it is on the surface world. Other than looking at the sky, the clock is the best way for players to tell the time, and it has been in Minecraft since the Java Edition Alpha v1.2.0 update to the game in 2010.
This redesign of the clock was done by u/CoatiNasu, and it adds quite a lot of detail to the traditionally simple clock. While there have been a lot of changes to Minecraft over the years, the clock has remained relatively steady, making these changes even more dramatic. The new loop shown within the clock greatly widens the area where players can tell time and replicates the day and night cycle of the game within this new space. The loop shows off a sunrise as well as birds and clouds in the daytime, and then displays a changing night sky covered in stars. This all replaces the golden arrow on a blue background in the original design that rotates around and is replaced by darkness at night.
While this redesign adds much more detail to the original clock, it also makes telling time a bit less straightforward. Fortunately, u/CoatiNasu actually has different events in the loop that indicate what time it is. For example, the day cycle shows a sunrise in the morning, birds around halfway through the day, two diagonal clouds in the afternoon, and one horizontal cloud with a sunset as night closes in.
As a game that encourages exploration underground, the clock can be essential for those trying to reemerge on the surface safely and u/CoatiNasu’s design allows for that. Though the clock has been a steady design, this redesign is a nice and needed change to Minecraft that would work well if it was added.
Then again, the simplicity of the original design leaves very little for players to get confused by. Its simplicity meant that any player could understand what time it was in the overworld quickly. Either way, those looking for a new design are going to have to try other mods of Minecraft at the moment, as u/CoatiNasu doesn’t provide any date for when their texture pack will be done.
