From enchanting books and items to laying down red stone, Minecraft is a relatively simple game that can quickly get complex. Though usually full of a lot of information, these systems reward players for mastering them. Of the major pieces of the game that can alter a playthrough, potion brewing in Minecraft is one of the best.

Minecraft has numerous potion options that can provide unique abilities or damaging side effects. Potions can grant players the ability to breathe underwater, see at night and in dark places as well as gain resistance against fire. Brewing these potions takes a number of different ingredients and players need to be careful about when they add specific items into a brew.

How to Brew Potions in Minecraft

There are several key pieces when it comes to brewing potions in Minecraft. First and foremost, a brewing stand is required to make any and all potions. These can be crafted with a single blaze rod and three blocks of cobblestone at a crafting station. They also generate naturally in Minecraft in the basement of igloos, end ships, as well as in village churches. If found, they can be mined with a pickaxe from these locations.

Once a brewing stand is acquired, players are going to need to acquire blaze powder, water bottles, and the required materials to craft their desired potion. Blaze powder comes from blaze rods and these are dropped by Blazes. Blazes naturally spawn in nether fortresses within the nether dimension in Minecraft. Water bottles come from dipping glass bottles in either a water source block or in a cauldron filled with water.

Activating a brewing stand opens up a relatively complex menu for players to work with. In the far left box, players need to place blaze powder in order to supply the needed fuel to brew potions. This blaze powder will fill up the horizontal bar completely yellow, indicating that the brewing stand is full and ready for brewing. The bottom three spaces are where potions and water bottles are placed. The items placed here will be affected by whatever is placed in the uppermost slot.

Most potions in Minecraft require a further ingredient from the Nether: nether warts. Nether warts, when placed in the top space in the brewing stand menu, transform the water bottles placed in the bottom three spaces into awkward potions.

These potions can then be transformed into the effect potions that players are likely looking to take advantage of. For example, an awkward potion when brewed with magma cream transforms into a potion of fire resistance. And when an awkward potion is brewed with a puffer fish it creates a potion of water breathing.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
