Minecraft's next major content update is going to introduce rideable camels to the game's creature ecosystem, a special new bookshelf block type, and a variety of other important additions. With well over a decade's worth of development having already gone into it, Mojang's flagship sandbox is still at the top of its game, and this isn't likely to change anytime soon.

Namely, Minecraft's annual Live event introduced a number of exciting new game concepts to the player base, and though the update 1.20 won't be coming out until 2023, it's provided a solid overview of the direction the game's heading in. Broadly speaking, players can expect even more variety and functionality available as part of the base game, with the new block, in particular, being a hugely important addition.

The availability of 7 new default skins in Minecraft was exciting in its own right, but the new camel mob and the chiseled bookshelf block took the limelight during Minecraft Live 2022. Camels are somewhat self-explanatory, as they add another interesting mob for players to interact with and ride on, but they're important because they can carry two players at a time. Chiseled bookshelves, however, are a major new feature in and of themselves, as they allow players to store and retrieve any and all books they might have. Perhaps more importantly, they can be integrated into Redstone circuits, allowing inventive fans to create hidden crevices, secret bases, and more.

Minecraft Live 2022 ended up offering a lot of exciting new reveals. Alongside the camel and the chiseled bookshelf, players can also expect to be able to craft a whole selection of new bamboo furniture and a bamboo raft. At the same time, the new hanging signs will provide a greater level of customization and functionality than had previously been available. These are mostly aesthetic additions, of course, but Minecraft players will use them to come up with all manner of inventive new creations, as is always the case.

The camel itself is, of course, not likely to be one of Minecraft's strongest and scariest mobs. Instead, its primary function seems to be to provide players with a two-seater alternative to the horse. Its presence will also make the game's desert biomes livelier and more interesting to travel across, which is always a welcomed change of pace in Minecraft.

Adding advanced blocks like the chiseled bookshelves to the game is going to be interesting for large-scale builds such as Parking_Price6980's Minecraft gothic castle, as they'll be able to load them up with even more secrets and special functionality than they previously could have. This new block could have great implications for Redstone builds, but its exact effects won't be known until 1.20 finally comes out sometime next year.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and a variety of legacy platforms.
