On May 17, 2019, Minecraft will be celebrating its ten year anniversary by hosting an event on the title's history, but now it seems there has been another noteworthy moment in the game's long-running history. Philza, a Twitch streamer who bears a world record for the longest running permadeath hardcore Minecraft playthrough, has finally been forced to end his run in a simple yet undercutting fashion.

For those not in the know, Minecraft's hardcore mode lives up the description, as there is no respawning and it is locked to the hardest difficulty. After dying in single player, the world is completely erased, meaning that the past 5 years of Philza's work has gone up in smokes, all thanks to a zombie baby and spider, which could be compared to the Minecraft Herobrine hoax in the sheer mischance of it all.

Most of this situation is good ol' RNG and a touch of bad luck. After defeating two zombies, a zombie baby spawned, but making the situation worse is that it spawned with full gold enchanted Minecraft armor. Philza was actually wearing Minecraft's Elytra wings, meaning that he had practically no defense, especially after he accidentally set the zombie baby on fire with his sword.

Realizing the unfortunate predicament he found himself in, the Minecraft record holder tried to flee, but was damaged enough by the zombie baby that a simple spider managed to drain the last of his hearts, resulting in the loss of everything he's worked on in the past 5 years. Sadly enough, he also had a golden apple in his inventory that could have saved him, but Philza panicked, forgetting to use it to save himself.

Next to Philza, the longest running hardcore mode Minecraft playthrough is a couple of weeks. So while he's lost claim to the longest-running playthrough, he still has the longest playthrough currently known in the community, and it doesn't appear he will lose those bragging rights any time soon. For those playing the sandbox video game, it's also worth mentioning that the latest update is live and has driven the Minecraft villagers insane.
