Minecraft Live 2022 gave fans a look at a few of the features that will be coming to Minecraft in update 1.20. Mojang also confirmed that it will continue to work on additional features to be added to the game, however, it never mentioned any theme for update 1.20. With the features that have been announced and the fact that every Minecraft update has had a theme, many fans are wondering what update 1.20’s theme could be, and what additional features that theme could bring.

Minecraft Live showcased four new features that would be coming to Minecraft in 2023, the new mob, the camel, hanging signs, a new bookshelf, and bamboo blocks. These four features may seem completely distinct from each other, but they could also point to a new biome update or even something that simply adds a lot of new items to help exploration. However, with nothing confirmed by Mojang, fans can only speculate as to what Minecraft update 1.20 holds in store, and what else Mojang is working on for 2023.

Desert Overhaul

Minecraft’s desert biome is in desperate need of an overhaul as there is simply not much for players to do here other than find villages and gather sand. The desert biome is also one of the worst places to start in Minecraft due to the lack of a reliable food source and the absence of wood blocks. However, with camels now coming into the game, players will have more of a reason to venture into the deserts, so update 1.20 could focus on improving other aspects of the desert biome.

Adding a wood type and a food source will likely mean adding oases within the desert biome to give players a respite from the long stretches of sand. These oases will not only have dirt instead of sand but also feature trees that can give players the vital resources required to survive in a Minecraft world. Further, adding in new structures could explain why bamboo blocks and chiseled bookshelves are making their way into the game, the former of which would blend in well with the sandy landscape of Minecraft’s deserts.

Exploration Update

Another avenue for Minecraft to go in update 1.20 would be an overhaul to how players explore the world. The camel and the raft are perfect examples of these, and many more features could be added along with them to make exploration a bit easier. Further, the new bookshelf could spawn naturally in a new temple that could be added in to encourage players to leave their bases and mines behind and explore the vast worlds created in Minecraft.

An exploration-themed update could also mean that certain items that players have been asking for could make their way to the game. Sleeping bags that let the players skip the night without creating a new respawn point are already used in numerous mods and would be a great exploration addition. New structures and even different types of rivers could be introduced to encourage players to use rafts and seek out the structures using camels.

Minecraft’s update 1.20 is arguably the most mysterious update yet with so little revealed and fans swimming in theories about what the future of the game could hold. Camels, bamboo blocks, rafts, hanging signs, and chiseled bookshelves may not seem like they have a lot in common, but they could definitely hint at either a desert biome overhaul or even an exploration overhaul. Whatever the case may be, players will be excited to try out the revealed features in Minecraft in the first snapshot of update 1.20, which was released only a few days after Minecraft Live 2022.

Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
