Minecraft is a game that is always being expanded upon through frequent updates that add new biomes, mobs, blocks, and features for players to explore. Following the release of Minecraft 1.19, players gained access to a new biome, the Mangroves, as well as new blocks and mobs that can aid them in their playthrough. While this update was not as large as the previous two that revamped mountains and caves in the game, the next update, 1.20, could be another major patch that adds in some highly anticipated revamps or features that change the way the game will be played.

Minecraft usually announces its plans for the next major update during the annual Minecraft Live event, where players not only get a sneak peek at the game’s future but can also play a part in deciding what new mob will be added to the game through the Mob Vote. With many theories circulating the internet, fans are wondering what the next major update to Minecraft will change. From a better End dimension to more in-depth farming and exploration, there are still many aspects of the game that can be greatly improved in the upcoming Minecraft 1.20 update.

The End Update

Minecraft Endermen Among Chorus Trees

The End Dimension was added to Minecraft back in 2011 and has served as the location for Minecraft’s final boss, the Ender Dragon. However, over the years the dimension has grown stale due to the lack of biomes and mobs that would make the location much more useful. As it stands now, the End is the place where players can kill the Ender dragon and find items such as the Elytra that are not found in the overworld, though it is mainly filled with empty space and floating platforms that can be tough to traverse.

An End Update would need to overhaul the current look of the dimension, adding in new biomes to make exploration a bit more interesting. New mobs such as Enderman variants would also go a long way and could help players find and farm rare resources such as Ender Pearls, and Phantom Membranes, the latter of which is used to repair Elytra. Changes to the End would make it more worthwhile for players to frequent the dimension and could even open up the game to allow players to create permanent bases in the dimension, kicking off new challenges and types of playthroughs.

Exploration Overhaul

The Wild Update added a new biome to Minecraft’s overworld as well as one of the most useful items for exploration, the Boat with Chest. This update, along with the updates to the mountains and caves, could be a glimpse of a more in-depth update focusing on adding new features when it comes to exploration. There are already countless mods that give players items such as sleeping bags, grappling hooks, and backpacks that make it easier to explore, as well as hundreds of new Minecraft biomes that make exploring more worthwhile.

Mojang has always encouraged the use of mods in its game, and the developer has sometimes even used these mods to add features to the base game for all players to enjoy. Items such as sleeping bags and backpacks would be welcome additions to Minecraft and could make exploring both a lot safer and significantly easier. Adding new biomes and mobs to the overworld would also encourage players to venture out, and better structures such as temples and mansions could add many more activities for players in the overworld.

The Ancient Dimension

Minecraft’s 1.19 update also added a new key feature found deep within caves, the Ancient City, that houses one of the most dangerous mobs in the game: The Warden. This feature was initially planned to be released during the Caves and Cliffs update and included a new structure that is found in these Ancient Cities that strongly resemble a portal. This could have been a hint that Minecraft will be adding a new dimension to the game that is accessed through the Ancient City in a future update, and it would certainly be fun to gain access to a whole new dimension to explore.

The Ancient Dimension could be home to the Wardens and as a result, may be one of the most dangerous dimensions in the game. Just like with the Nether, it could also feature a new ore that would be more durable and effective than Netherite, the current strongest material in the game. Adding in this new dimension could also mean that Wardens would drop useful loot and give players a lot more to explore. With the blocks already set up in the base game, an Ancient Dimension update could be just the thing that players have been waiting for.

As rumors of Minecraft’s next big update continue to circulate, fans will eagerly await the arrival of Minecraft Live to find out what Mojang has planned for update 1.20. From a new dimension to overhauling an existing one, there are many approaches that can be taken with the next update. Whatever the case may be, Minecraft update 1.20 will likely lead to tons of fans exploring the world to uncover all the new mysteries when it releases.

Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
