Beloved '80s action-comedy Midnight Run is officially getting a sequel, starring and produced by actress Regina Hall. Robert De Niro, who starred in the original Universal film, will also serve as a producer on the sequel.

Directed by Martin Brest, Universal's Midnight Run was released in 1988 and starred De Niro as a bounty hunter who's tasked with tracking down a hapless mob accountant played by the late Charles Grodin. However, Grodin's accountant claims to be deathly afraid of flying, so the two disagreeable men must travel across the country on a high-stakes road trip as they're pursued by the FBI and vicious Las Vegas Mobster who's out for blood.

Plot details for the Midnight Run sequel are being kept under wraps at the moment, but It has been confirmed that Hall will star and produce alongside Jesse Collins while Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Aeysha Carr will pen the script. However, It's unclear how the new film will connect to the original. De Niro is confirmed to be serving as a producer on the sequel, but there's no word on whether he will be reprising his role from the original film. It's possible that the new movie will feature Hall as a brand new character, perhaps a new bounty hunter who's saddled with another difficult bounty played by a popular comedic actor.

Midnight Run is widely considered to be a staple of the buddy action-comedy genre. Along with other '80s action comedies such as Lethal Weapon, the film laid the groundwork for dozens of buddy movies, including the Rush Hour films and the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw. While there have been several less than desirable TV movie sequels, a film sequel has long been in the works.

Hall is known for her comedic roles in films such as Scary Movie, and Girls Trip. She's also been featured in more dramatic roles in films including The Hate U Give and her breakout role in Love and Basketball. Hall has also had a long career acting in television. She stars in the Showtime comedy series Black Monday, alongside Oceans 11 star Don Cheadle, and she has appeared in supporting roles on the ABC sitcom Black-ish and HBO's Insecure.

You can watch Midnight Run currently streaming on Netflix in the US.
