Midnight Mass is the upcoming horror Netflix show created by Mike Flanagan, the mastermind of The Haunting of Hill House and its sequel series. Flanagan will also be directing this new supernatural series, which has a premiere date in September on Netflix. The title of the first episode is “Genesis,” and Midnight Mass will feature familiar actors from both seasons of Haunting, as well as some new faces.

On the Twitter page Netflix Geeked, the first full trailer for Midnight Mass was released. The trailer is two minutes and nineteen seconds, and viewers can rest assured knowing there are no obvious spoilers or heavy plot details given away. The premise of the show appears to be following a recent trend in horror films and shows, where viewers follow a period piece (ex. Fear Street Part 3) or limited cast drama with horrific elements shot in a very cinematic way.

The story of Midnight Mass will follow a charismatic priest who arrives at an isolated community set in the present day. The trailer features a creepy rendition of the popular pop song Somewhere Only We Know by Keane, adding sounds effects that might make some shiver. The priest will be played by actor Hamish Linklater, and this is no ordinary priest, as mysterious and miraculous events start occurring.

Kate Siegel, who is both Flanagan’s very talented wife and lead actor in most of his work (including The Haunting of Bly Manor), will play the character named Erin Greene. There is one small detail in the trailer that maybe a few people will see as a spoiler, however, the detail has become sort of a trope in Flanagan’s work about a sinister or dark past coming back to haunt characters in the present. The character played by actor Zach Gilford apparently has some sort of event from his past that is still haunting him.

The character’s mother says, “I know you struggle with what happened,” and Gilford’s character responds with, “With what I did,” after which an image of a disfigured, ghostly woman appears at night in his bedroom. This character seems to have left for a long time, and his community is welcoming him home. The mother then says, “but help is here.” After this, a strange man with a knife appears, who Gilford waves at. The Midnight Mass trailer then introduces the priest, who says he is “here to help.”

Strange things start happening, and perhaps the most shocking moment from the trailer was when a young girl, played by actor Annarah Cymone, who was bound to a wheelchair suddenly gets up and walks at the priest’s request. This story will most likely be a twist on popular events from the Bible, especially with a first episode title of “Genesis.” One of the characters played by Haunting of Hill House actor Samantha Sloyan even says, “we're living in miraculous times.” Fans of Flanagan’s work will definitely see another great drama-filled horror with some more amazing camera work with this new series, so be sure not to miss out on Midnight Mass.

Midnight Mass will premiere on September 24, 2021, on Netflix.
