Warner Bros. today announced a spin-off mobile game for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Downloadable and free-to-play, the Middle-earth: Shadow of War mobile game is a real-time RPG featuring the main characters of the main title and other iconic Lord of the Rings heroes. The mobile game is planned to launch this fall, but excited fans can pre-register via the game’s official website starting today.

Accompanying the announcement of the Middle-earth: Shadow of War mobile game is a trailer introducing some of the mobile game’s content. While over half of the trailer is made up of cut-scenes already shown from the main title, there’s also a good chunk reserved for showing off the active RPG gameplay. It’s not clear exactly how much control the player has over the characters’ actions on-screen, as much of it seems fully automated, but it does show some characters’ unique abilities.

Behind the scenes, as befits a free-to-play mobile game, there are several systems of progression for players to become entwined in. Each character, from Talion to Boromir, has a class, experience level, and rating, which will likely keep players invested in the game for as long as they enjoy it. Also shown are various currencies, which are likely takes on the standard energy systems that keep players from progressing too fast.

A major focus being advertised for the game is its inclusion of major characters from Middle-earth: Shadow of War and its “continuation”of Talion’s journey. Characters including Celebrimbor and the recently revealed Shelob play major roles, but exactly how much story is involved in the game isn’t clear. There’s definitely plenty of orc killing judging from the trailer, but just how far the game goes in actually telling a story remains to be left detailed.

Speaking of orcs, Middle-earth: Shadow of War mobile will also feature its own take on the franchise’s well known Nemesis System. It’s meant to allow the player to not only fight off an endless variety of orc enemies, but also create their own orc army with which to fight. Expect more details on this feature and others closer to the game’s release.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC starting October 10. Middle-earth: Shadow of War mobile will be available on iOS and Android devices this fall.
