XBox Live Manager Offers Official Statement on Highjacked Accounts

Xbox Live Hacked Accounts

As many of you know, there have been several stories about hacked Xbox Live accounts lately, and Microsoft has repeatedly stated that there has not been a breach in security.

Yesterday, Alex Garden, General Manager of Xbox Live, released  a statement regarding the issue, and he explains the problem from a a mostly sympathetic view point.

Garden's comments come from a much longer release that was posted over at Major Nelson's blog (which you can read in full - HERE):

As all of us know, account hijacking across the Internet continues to grow. It's a thriving — albeit illegal — industry affecting online services the globe over. Last year, there was a surge of personal information being compromised and sold, and this undoubtedly has had an impact on all of us. While we here at Xbox have no evidence of a security breach in the Xbox LIVE service, that is of little comfort to our members whose accounts have been compromised by malicious and illegal attacks.

In the larger release, Garden continues by reassuring Xbox Live users that they are constantly looking for ways to make the system more secure.  He also stated that recovering the stolen and lost accounts in a timely manner is Microsoft's top priority - as well as includes a lengthy set of precautions that players can take to avoid online scammers.

This statement may come as a bit of a surprise because of how candid Garden is about security -  showing that, despite some less than helpful support personnel, the team at Microsoft are people too and, instead of a hollow company, these people sympathize with everyone that has been stolen from.

That said, a few questions are still on the table - especially with how prevalent the attacks seem to be at this point. Will there ever be a way to stop account thefts completely or, at the very least, is Microsoft as prepared as they say they are for actual attacks to the Xbox Live system.

Ranters, do you think Xbox Live will ever be truly secure?  Have you or someone you know been affected by the sweep of account thefts?
